A detailed examination of South Africa's eight Test defeats since the start of 2023 has identified a consistent set of conditions that made those losses possible, as the Springboks prepare for their November Nations Championship fixtures in Europe.

The analysis, published by Planet Rugby on 24 October 2026, draws on official match reports alongside SANZAAR and World Rugby statistical packs to construct a picture of what has historically worked against the world champions.
What the Data Says About Beating the Springboks
Winning sides averaged 29.9 points across the eight defeats, and six of them scored 25 or more. Crucially, not one of the eight victors scored fewer tries than South Africa in their respective match.
The recurring features identified across those performances include surviving the set piece, attacking before the Springbok defence has reset, kicking with variety from multiple positions, and maintaining possession with near-fanatical care.
Australia's victory at Ellis Park in August 2025 illustrated the kicking dimension sharply. Despite making 42 fewer carries than South Africa and recording nine fewer offloads, the Wallabies scored six tries and won 38-22. They kicked 29 times to the Springboks' 18 and retained possession at 98.7% of their rucks and mauls, compared to South Africa's 95.1%.
Three weeks after that result, New Zealand won at Eden Park with just 40% of the territory, kicking 34 times and scoring their first two tries from an attacking kick off a lineout variation and a movement following a 50:22.
The Counter-Evidence That Complicates the Blueprint
The analysis is careful to note what the numbers alone cannot capture. In Cape Town in August 2026, New Zealand executed the tactical plan closely, finishing with 56% possession, 481 metres gained, 40 defenders beaten and four tries scored, and still lost 33-26, with South Africa's 33 points coming from three tries, three conversions and four penalties.
Two of the eight victories were also built not on attacking output but on exceptional defence and accurate goal-kicking. Ireland's wins in Paris in September 2023 (13-8) and in Durban in July 2024 (25-24) each featured only a single try, with the Durban match settled by two drop goals from replacement fly-half Ciarán Frawley after Ireland were held up over the line.
The bench emerged as another decisive factor. The window between the 50th and 70th minutes has historically been where the Springbok replacements have settled matches since 2019, and the sides who beat them kept scoring through it. Argentina's winning penalty in Santiago del Estero in September 2024 came in the 68th minute; New Zealand's 21-point burst at Ellis Park this August came after half-time.
South Africa face Italy in Turin on 7 November, France at the Stade de France on 13 November, and Ireland in Dublin on 21 November, with a potential Twickenham finals weekend following immediately after.
