First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has congratulated Temwa Chawinga on finishing in the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or, describing the result as a milestone for the whole country.

In a statement posted on her official Facebook page, Mutharika said Chawinga had become the first female African footballer to finish in the top 10 of the award.
“This is not just Temwa’s achievement, but a national milestone we should all celebrate,” she wrote.
She said Chawinga had broken “record after record” at club and national level over four consecutive years, which she described as a powerful message about Malawian talent.
Mutharika also linked the achievement to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, saying it should encourage Malawi to believe it can compete at the highest level.
She closed her message with a Chitumbuka cheer: “Congratulations, Temwa! Iwe ndi dolo.“
