Remarkable comeback
The re-election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as Brazil’s President has brought relief to many in Brazil and around the world, ending uncertainty over the country’s political future. The high-voltage election campaign had all the ingredients of a Hollywood cliffhanger which would be remembered as one of the most bitterly contested elections ever in the history of the nation in recent times. It is obvious that President-elect Lula’s campaign to continue pro-people policies resonated well with the electorate. On his part, the Opposition candidate should accept his defeat with dignity and grace.

The detailed reports on the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, held at the Mysore Race Club, have sparked interest even among readers like me who do not usually follow equestrian sports (Sports page). While the Tamil Nadu government deserves appreciation for ending horse racing, enthusiasts could perhaps be allowed to engage in inter-venue betting on a limited scale.
