Despite the rumours, autumn knitwear doesn’t have to stick to a sometimes dreary palette of brown, grey and cream. But there’s a solution, and it comes in the form of a pop of colour - the easiest way to brighten up the season’s everyday layers.
Recently, cobalt blue has made a return, making it the perfect hue if you’re looking for something that will instantly brighten up your wardrobe. M&S, for instance, has just released a brilliant blue satin dress - a endlessly chic and easy to wear staple that adds a touch of elegance to every outfit formula. Of course, as with any satin dress, it’s extremely formal, but there’s a much easier and more pared-back way to embrace the trend in the form of knitwear.
The solution, I've found, comes in the form of a cardigan: the ultimate throw on and go staple that can transform any look in an instant. The best one I’ve seen so far? Next’s Soft Touch Cotton Rich Crew Neck Cardigan.

A brilliant take on the bold shade, featuring a classic crew neck shape that feels seriously easy to wear. Its pared back silhouette makes it a great basic, meaning it will pair easily with pieces you already own.
But if you look closely, you’ll notice something especially endearing: tiny bow-detail buttons that give the staple extra personality. Button it up and wear it as a top, or leave it open over a simple boxy T shirt when you need an extra layer once the temperature truly drops.

For day to day wear, I’d style it with straight leg jeans and loafers, letting the bold colour do the talking. A black midi skirt would also look great with the cardigan, as well as a pair of knee high boots for that extra touch of elevation.
