General Motors $GM said it will transfer the listing of its common stock to the Nasdaq $NDAQ Global Select Market from the New York Stock Exchange.
The company expects its stock to stay listed on the NYSE through market close on Nov. 16 and to begin trading on the Nasdaq on Nov. 17. The stock will keep the "GM" ticker symbol. Nasdaq has approved the listing, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
GM Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said in a statement that the company's approach is generating stockholder value and that Nasdaq is "a natural home for our listing as we grow." He added: "We're grateful for our long-standing partnership with the New York Stock Exchange and its remarkable legacy."
A Nasdaq listing makes GM a candidate to possibly be added to the Nasdaq-100 Index, the company said. Existing stockholders are not required to do anything.
GM's board authorized the move on Monday, the filing said. The board also approved changes to the company's bylaws that update the independence criteria in the definition of "Independent Director" to reflect the Nasdaq listing. The changes take effect when trading on the Nasdaq begins.
GM stock was up about 2.4% in premarket trading on Tuesday. It finished Monday at $76.31, putting the company's total value at about $64.4 billion.
The move ends a long run on the NYSE. GM began trading on the exchange in 1911 and came back in 2010 after a bankruptcy that the government supported, according to CNBC. GM is trying to reshape its image around technology, according to CNBC.
GM hosted an event a week ago centered on technology, where executives outlined its plans for AI and autonomous vehicles, according to CNBC.
Walmart $WMT, DoorDash and Palantir $PLTR Technologies have moved from the NYSE to the Nasdaq in recent years, according to CNBC. Hilton Worldwide $HLT Holdings announced plans last week to move its trading to the Nasdaq from the NYSE, according to CNBC.
