A damp, grey Monday with passing showers settles over São Paulo, so keep the metro card and an umbrella close.
The city’s political story was decided last night in the presidential runoff, and this morning’s public mood is quieter than the markets.
Business coverage in words only: Lula won Sunday’s runoff, Brazil’s mid-month inflation undershot forecasts, and global investors now look to a week of central-bank decisions.
Today is a day for Pinacoteca’s calm galleries, a long coffee-led work session in Vila Madalena, and a low-key evening in Pinheiros.

What to See & Do
MONDAY IN SÃO PAULO
TODAY’S PICK — ART IN THE RAIN
Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Luz
The Pinacoteca is open today from 10am to 6pm in Luz. It is the best wet-weather move in the centre: Brazilian collection, high ceilings and proper quiet.
Entry costs R$40, and you can reach it on Linha 4-Amarela, Luz station.
Spend ninety minutes with the 19th-century Brazilian portraits and then take the covered walkway to the contemporary annexe. Photography is allowed in most galleries without flash.
Afterwards, walk two minutes to Mercado Municipal, open Monday to Saturday from 6am to 6pm. Lunch at the mezzanine counters avoids the heaviest crush.
This is the committed choice: art in the morning, market lunch, then a metro back west before the evening rain picks up.
OUTDOORS — SHORT FLAT WALK
Parque Ibirapuera, gate 5
The park stays open until midnight and costs nothing, but today’s rain window is best used between 11am and 3pm. Stick to the paved loop near the lake.
Enter at the Pedrosa gate, buy a coffee at the central kiosk, and keep the route under 45 minutes so you can reach shelter quickly. The ground will be wet and leaf-slick.
COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — VILA MADALENA
Desk weather
Head to Coffee Lab in Vila Madalena, open from 9am, for serious espresso and tables that welcome laptops on weekdays. Wi-Fi is reliable and the back room stays quiet.
If you need a formal desk, WeWork Paulista in Jardins offers day passes with call booths and fast internet. Book before noon because rain pushes more people indoors.
THE CONTRASTING PLAY — OPEN-AIR WALK
Beco do Batman alley
For the opposite mood, walk the Beco do Batman in Vila Madalena between showers. The open-air street art is always open and free, and today it will be almost empty.
Carry an umbrella and skip the side streets if the rain turns heavy. The cobbles drain poorly and the alleys feel quiet in wet weather.
TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM
Pinheiros, low-key
Stay in Pinheiros once the rain settles. Start with a glass of natural wine at Bar Balcão on Rua Fidalga, a neighbourhood room with easy weeknight flow.
For the second stop, Pirajá on the same strip serves cold chope and good appetisers until late. It offers covered seating and screens on slow news nights.
No big match or headline concert tonight, so this is a conversation-and-food evening rather than a crowd night. Book a table at Bar Balcão for any group above two.

Getting Around
TRANSPORT
The single-journey metro fare is R$5.40. Lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 4-Yellow and 5-Lilac run the normal Monday service, with the usual afternoon peak crowding from 5:30pm to 7pm.
Rodízio today: vehicles with plates ending 1 or 2 cannot circulate in the expanded centre from 7am–10am and 5pm–8pm. Ride apps are the dry option across town.
05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER
Lunch: Mercado Municipal in Centro for mortadella sandwiches and pastel, around R$40–70 with a drink. Alternatively, a quieter plate at Balaio, near Paulista, for R$65–90.
Dinner: Bar Balcão in Pinheiros for petiscos and wine, R$90–140 per head. Pirajá next door does good bolinho de arroz and cold chope closer to R$70–100.
06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW
Carry a compact umbrella, a thin waterproof layer and your phone battery pack. Cards and Pix accepted widely; keep R$30 in cash for market stalls and small counters.
Book museum tickets at the door for Pinacoteca, but reserve ahead only if you are bringing a group. Most bars around Pinheiros take cards and Pix.
In the rain, watch your bag on the Luz station footbridge and keep phones inside your jacket rather than in back pockets around Santa Cecília.
07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS
For newcomers, the Expats São Paulo WhatsApp thread usually shares weather-day coffee plans; ask around Vila Madalena cafés after 4pm. The city is quieter this Monday due to the runoff result.
Digital nomads tend to gather at Coffee Lab or WeWork Paulista on wet weekdays. Arrive before 11am for the best seats near power outlets.
08
Game Day
THE WEEK AHEAD
No major São Paulo club match falls on this Monday. The quiet part of the calendar is why the city’s bars are tuned to news and NFL-style weeknight screens.
Keep an eye on Corinthians, Palmeiras and São Paulo FC fixture pages this week; the next big match-day crowd will form near Vila Madalena and Itaim Bibi.Olímpico bar in Pinheiros and The Blue Pub in Moema remain the safe choices when a local derby appears.Call ahead for table bookings on match nights.
09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES
Brazil’s real strengthened 1.3% on Friday to R$4.98 per US$ and the Ibovespa, the main stock index, rose 0.5% to 205,083 before the runoff. The market board above carries the settled Friday session because markets stayed shut over the weekend.
Brazil’s mid-month inflation gauge, the IPCA-15, rose 0.32% in October against a 0.43% forecast (previous 0.70%), and the annual rate reached 4.62% against a 4.73% forecast (previous 4.47%). Source: RT economic calendar (RT).
The central bank’s target is 3 percent with a tolerance band of 1.5 percentage points either side. This week’s global focus shifts to the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan decisions, plus big tech earnings. For expats earning in dollars or euros, any signal on US rates will matter more than the day-to-day exchange-rate print.
