Overview:
Canva Craft is an AI image generation model developed by Canva Research to create visuals with a stronger understanding of design composition.
Unlike image generators focused primarily on producing pictures, Craft separates composition planning from image rendering to improve element placement, visual hierarchy, and text legibility.
It supports image generation at up to 2K resolution, more than 30 aspect ratios and text in 55 languages.
Creating a polished visual often takes more than generating an attractive image. Text must be readable, objects need to sit in the right places, and the overall layout should work for its intended purpose. Canva is addressing these challenges with Craft, its first in-house AI image generation model, developed by Canva Research.
Unlike tools focused mainly on producing realistic pictures from text prompts, Canva Craft is designed with graphic design in mind. It aims to create visuals that combine image quality with thoughtful composition, making them useful for marketing materials, social media posts, presentations, and other creative projects. The model is available through Canva’s Dream Lab and to developers through its public API.
What is Canva Craft AI?
Canva Craft is an image-generation model designed to understand how design elements fit together. It can create images from written prompts, emphasizing layout, typography, object placement, and visual hierarchy.
This makes it particularly relevant for people who need more than a standalone image. For example, a marketer could generate a promotional visual with a headline and supporting elements, while a small business owner might use it to create a poster or product graphic.
According to Canva, Craft was trained using millions of human-designed templates from its content library, including presentations, infographics, menus, and social media designs. This training approach is intended to help the model understand the structure of finished designs, not just the appearance of photographs.

A Two-Stage Approach to Image Generation
One of Craft’s main features is its two-stage architecture. Instead of going directly from a prompt to the final image, the model first plans the composition, then renders the visual.
During the planning stage, it interprets the prompt and decides which elements should appear, where they should sit, how large they should be, and how the text should fit into the layout. A separate rendering stage then turns that plan into the finished image.
This separation improves object placement, consistency, and text legibility. It's especially useful when a prompt calls for several elements arranged in a specific order, such as a product advertisement or an event poster.
Key Features: Resolution, Text and Flexible Layouts
Craft can generate images at up to 2K resolution and supports more than 30 aspect ratios, including custom dimensions. This gives users flexibility to create visuals for different platforms, from vertical social media stories to landscape banners and presentation graphics.
Text generation is another important feature. Canva said that Craft can generate text in 55 languages, making it useful for businesses and creators producing content for international audiences. Its design-focused architecture aims to make text placement and visual hierarchy more accurate than a workflow that treats lettering as just another part of an image.
These capabilities could reduce the manual corrections needed after generation, though users should still check spelling, layout, and small details before publishing.

Editable Images With Canva Magic Layers
Generating an image is only part of the creative process. Designers often need to change a headline, reposition an object, or adjust a background without rebuilding the entire visual.
Craft is designed to work with Canva’s Magic Layers feature, which can turn generated images into editable design elements. Instead of treating the output as one flat picture, this approach lets users work with individual components and make targeted adjustments.
For marketing teams, this could make it easier to adapt a visual for different campaigns, formats, or audiences. A single concept can be reused across several designs, with text or composition adjusted as needed. Editability depends on the output and the elements the system can identify accurately.
Who Can Benefit from Canva Craft?
Craft is designed for a broad range of creative tasks, including social media graphics, advertisements, presentation visuals, illustrations, portraits, product imagery and landscapes.
Small businesses could use it to produce promotional material without starting every design from scratch. Content creators may find it useful for blog graphics and social posts, while marketing teams could use it to explore visual concepts before finalizing a campaign.
Canva has also made Craft available to developers through its public API, allowing them to explore image generation in their own products and workflows. This could open up uses beyond Canva itself, including marketing platforms and e-commerce tools.

Availability, Safety and What Comes Next
Canva Craft is available globally through Dream Lab in Canva, while developers can access it through the public API. Canva also says the model is backed by Canva Shield, its AI safety framework, which includes content moderation, privacy controls and tools for reporting potentially harmful or misleading material.
The company is developing faster versions, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, to make image generation more efficient. Further work is expected to focus on image quality, finer details, and greater editing control.
Craft’s main distinction is its focus on design rather than image generation alone. By combining composition planning, multilingual text, and editable outputs, Canva is aiming to make AI visuals more practical for everyday creative work. The results will still need human review, but the model could make the journey from an idea to a usable design considerably smoother.
