A thrilling, roller-coaster opening day at Newlands produced high-octane Test cricket, ending with the match poised on a knife-edge after Australia bowled out the Proteas for 329.
Having been surprisingly put in to bat by Australian skipper Pat Cummins on a belter of a pitch, the Proteas seized total control in the morning session through openers Aiden Markram and Marques Ackerman.
However, Australia responded with characteristic resilience to spark a dramatic fightback. Spinners Nathan Lyon and Cooper Connolly triggered a middle-order collapse to leave South Africa reeling before Marco Jansen and Ryan Rickelton fought back.
Yet the final word belonged to lef-arm speedster Mitchell Starc, who produced a devastating spell under the fading Cape Town light with the second new ball to wrap up an enthralling day’s play.
Here are five key takeaways from Day 1 of the third Test:
Australia’s toss decision backfires early
Pat Cummins surprised many by choosing to field first on a docile Newlands surface offering minimal movement for his much-vaunted seam attack. South Africa’s openers punished the decision in the opening session, racing to 140/0 by lunch to record the Proteas' first century opening stand in 41 Test matches.
Ackerman and Markram lay a solid foundation, but ...
Ackerman (95) and Markram (78) provided the ultimate launching pad for the hosts. Ackerman played with fearless fluency, reaching his half-century in style and hammering Starc for four consecutive boundaries in an over, before falling just short of a maiden Test century after playing a loose shot when Nathan Lyon enticed him out of his crease.
Middle-order collapse triggers chaos
After cruising to 158/0, South Africa experienced a mid-innings slide following some irresponsible batting. Lyon turned the tide by removing Ackerman and bowling Temba Bavuma for a duck. Markram and David Bedingham scored half-centuries before falling to the short ball. Left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly picked up his first Test wicket to reduce the hosts to 232/6 and throw Australia right back into the contest.
Jansen and Rickelton mount a crucial rescue act
Faced with a brewing crisis at 232/6, Marco Jansen (52 off 66 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (42) launched a counter-attack. Playing with aggressive intent and composure, the pair stitched together a vital 95-run seventh-wicket partnership, dragging South Africa past 300 and restoring control heading into the second new ball.
Starc’s twilight blitz leaves the match on a knife-edge
Just as South Africa looked set to bat out the day, Mitchell Starc produced a masterclass spell with the second new ball under fading light. The left-arm quick took four wickets in just 11 deliveries, including castling Jansen and pinning Rickelton in front to finish with 6/72 and bowl South Africa out for 329 at stumps.
