Helsing, a German military AI company, unveiled its Contra AI-controlled autonomous air defense system via a video posted on X on Monday. Helsing described it as a cost-effective system optimized to tackle jet-powered drone and missile attacks.
Helsing’s Contra system is intended to solve the existing air defense conundrum where the only current way of effectively intercepting jet-powered drones such as Russia’s Geran 4s and 5s is the use of multimillion-dollar interceptors.

Contra is intended to control two relatively inexpensive interceptor missiles: the AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush said to cost less than $100,000 each compared with Patriot PAC-3 missiles at $4-5 million a unit and the NASAMS (AMRAAM / AIM-9X) at around $1million a throw.
The military issues website Defense News cites recent intelligence reports, that Russia is increasing jet-powered drone and cruise missile production, to as much as 4,000 units a month, which, along with launch sites, could bring parts of the EU within range.
Artificial intelligence and interceptor speed, the key
While still at the developmental stage, Helsing bills Contra, based on its well-proven Altra C2 platform, as an autonomous AI-based operation that will allow the real-time detection and engagement of hundreds or more drone and missile threats into a single air defense picture.
It is anticipated to be “field-ready” by late 2027, with Helsing saying its seekers rely on European supply chains and is free from Chinese components.

Russia Says Three Tankers With Diesel En Route to US
US President Donald Trump this month struck an agreement with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to ease sanctions in exchange for Moscow releasing diesel onto global markets.
Intercepts would be achieved through a combination of two, advanced radar guided, container-launched missile interceptors whose performance is designed to overlap and supplement each other’s capability.
The AD-1 “Inferno,” which Helsing Chief Executive Gundbert Scherf says is intended as the “workhorse” of the counter-drone system, is powered by a jet engine, and flies at around 700 kph (435 mph) at a range of around 20 kilometers (12 miles). It can loiter over a defended area, swarm with other interceptors, and make repeated passes.
The AD-2 “Ambush,” intended as a rapid interceptor against drones and missiles that break through the AD-1 “net,” has a solid rocket motor and is said to have a flight speed of Mach 2.5 (1,900 mph, 3,000 kph) at a range of in excess of 20 kilometers (12 miles).
Both systems are able to be redirected mid-course by the Contra ground stations with an onboard radar-seeker for all-weather terminal guidance. While designed for, and capable of, stand-alone operation, Helsing said the system is set up to rapidly integrate with third-party counter-drone systems including missile interceptors, lasers, and guns. The company said Contra has already demonstrated such hardware integrations to multiple military customers.
Niklas Köhler, Co-Founder and President of Helsing, says: “Contra ends the air defense dilemma: slow fair-weather drones, or million-euro missiles fired at cheap, mass-produced targets. Our AI links existing sensors and effectors in real time and adds our interceptors, AD-1 and AD-2. With jet and rocket propulsion, a low-cost all-weather radar seeker, and two independent European supply chains, they deliver autonomous fire superiority up to ten kilometers (6+ miles) high – affordable and at industrial scale.”
