Russian Ballistic Missiles Hit Kyiv University Area, Killing 1, Wounding 10

Russia struck the grounds of a university in Kyiv and the surrounding area, including the Kyoto Park, with ballistic missiles on Monday night, Oct. 26, killing one person and injuring 10 others.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko’s latest update, nine of the wounded were hospitalized, while the casualties toll steadily rose by the minutes as emergency crews reached sites across the Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts.

Local authorities fear that the number of victims may continue to rise, as some people may be trapped under the rubble.

Around 11:49 p.m. local time, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported that Russian forces damaged the buildings of one of the universities, its dormitories and nearby residential buildings. At the time of the report, it was not immediately clear which universities were struck.

In Dniprovskyi district, a three-story non-residential building was partially destroyed, from the roof to the basement, where one person was found dead.

Zelensky urges partners to provide critical defense

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, warning that there may be repeated strikes. Around the same time, Shahed attacks were also ongoing, both against Kyiv and other cities nationwide.

“When the threat is constant, when strikes can come at any moment and simply hit cities and villages, that artificial delays in air defense for Ukraine help terror,” Zelensky said, echoing earlier warnings that Ukraine is currently facing critical shortages of interceptor missiles.

Strikes near metro, homes and student dormitory

In Desnianskyi district, a missile landed near a metro station, setting a private vehicle on fire. Another hit near a residential building, where people were feared to be trapped inside, the Mayor said.

A strike near a university dormitory in the same district blew out the building’s windows.

Klitschko initially confirmed that a 20-year-old woman had been injured there, but later said that most of those wounded in the attack were students living in the dormitory.

Rescue operations at the affected sites were still ongoing at the time of the report.
