The Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has strongly condemned Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir’s remarks on journalists and demanded that he publicly apologise within 24 hours.
In a statement issued today, the organisation warned of tougher programmes if the police chief fails to withdraw his comments and apologise.
Speaking at an event marking the launch of Community Bank Bangladesh’s Islamic banking services in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar, the IGP said, “If they do not get money from drug dealers, journalists write that the police are ineffective. Such reports are published in various national media outlets.”
Reacting to the remarks, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel said such sweeping comments questioning journalists’ professionalism and integrity were contrary to the principles of independent journalism.
They said reporting on drug trafficking, crime, irregularities and corruption was part of journalists’ professional responsibility and that such remarks from a person holding a high public office were unacceptable.
The DRU leaders said if any police officer has a complaint against a journalist, it should be addressed through legal channels on the basis of specific evidence.
Making blanket negative comments about journalists not only undermines the dignity of the profession but also risks eroding public trust in the media, they added.
