Last week, we saw a very interesting trend in AI pop up: reverse-engineering smart TVs. The idea was that you sicced Claude Code on your TV, and it would dig its way in, remove bloatware, strip out the ads, and even replace the UI with one you prefer. Things came to a head when someone managed to breach Samsung's Tizen OS with Claude Code, which is no easy feat.
However, the party may already be over. Someone claimed that Anthropic is apparently blocking requests to reverse-engineer TVs as part of Opus 5.5's safeguards, while the same task for a video game remains unblocked.
Anthropic may have just stopped Claude from reverse-engineering your TV

Over on the ClaudeAI subreddit, user targaryenNotJon claims that they were trying to reverse-engineer a TV when Claude showed the above message. It states that Opus 5.5 hit a guardrail, which means it couldn't carry out the request. These usually trigger when Anthropic's systems detect that you're using Claude for nefarious purposes, such as hacking.
TargaryenNotJon goes on to claim that Claude seemingly had no issues when told to reverse-engineer a video game. It implies that Anthropic has seen the smart TV jailbreaking stories and added a new rule to the safeguards to prevent the behavior. Comments in the Reddit thread are full of people decrying Anthropic for seemingly bending to the will of smart TV manufacturers.
However, as is always the case with anecdotal evidence, it's worth taking this claim with a pinch of salt. As likely as it is that Anthropic is cracking down on reverse-engineering smart TVs, they may have tweaked the safeguards to protect against a different problem, and smart TVs got caught in the crossfire.
Until we get more reports in and Anthropic has enough time to address the complaints, treat this as an unverified claim for now. However, if Claude really has been blocked from reverse-engineering smart TVs, it's going to push people toward using LLMs from other vendors, or even open-source ones.
