The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) said Tuesday it is high time that the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) started to fulfill its legal role and respond to what it described as the hate speech and lack of professionalism that have flooded the media scene.
UNS called on the members of the REM Council to hold a special session to rule on the complaints received and take the necessary legal measures to halt media abuse and normalize the media landscape.
“The REM Council has the legal authority, but also the obligation, to summon the editors and owners of media outlets that break the law, run political campaigns, and abuse the public good entrusted to them (their presence on the airwaves or cable systems),” UNS said.
UNS pointed out that media outlets are required to notify the media regulator of any programming interruptions or changes to their broadcasting schedules, given that the REM Council granted them access to this public good under specific conditions.
