Protests against the 1,600-MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project (SUHEP). intensified in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, where the Tagin Students’ Union called a 12-hour shutdown on Sunday, leading to clashes between protesters and police.
According to the report, the shutdown was called to oppose the construction of the Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project and protest a police search at the residence of the Tagin Students’ Union president on Saturday.
During the shutdown, protesters allegedly set a vehicle on fire on the road, while supporters of the bandh were also involved in confrontations with police personnel. The incident added to tensions in the district over the ongoing opposition to the hydroelectric project.
The Tagin Students’ Union called the shutdown in response to the police search at its president’s residence, expressing its opposition to the action. Beyond protesting the police operation, the organisation reiterated its demand to cancel the 1,600-MW Upper Subansiri Hydroelectric Project.
The project, located on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border, has faced opposition from some local communities over concerns about its construction and potential impact.
The latest protest highlights the continuing resistance to the project in the region, with the students’ body demanding its cancellation. Further details on the clashes, the extent of disruption caused by the shutdown, and the police response were not immediately available.
