Trapped-ion quantum developer IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has received a $7.5 million Phase 2 follow-on allocation from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to expand its quantum networking installation in Rome, New York. The milestone exercises planned options under the broader $21.1 million multi-year collaboration initiated following IonQ’s acquisition of quantum networking specialist Qubitekk.
While Phase 1 focused on building a foundational fiber-bound entanglement distribution link, Phase 2 equips the AFRL facility with hardware and control systems to connect heterogeneous quantum computers across both commercial telecom fiber and open air. Key upgrades focus on mitigating the optical transmission losses and wavelength incompatibilities that complicate multi-node quantum networking in operational defense environments.

Bridging Closed Cryostats to Open Tactical Channels
A primary bottleneck in scaling distributed quantum architectures is the interface between disparate hardware modalities and long-haul communications lines. Trapped-ion systems emit single photons at specific atomic transition wavelengths that experience severe optical attenuation when routed through standard telecommunications fiber or the atmosphere.
IonQ’s Phase 2 hardware upgrades deploy dedicated Quantum Frequency Converters (QFC) alongside O-band compatible networking components. By converting ion-emitted photons to standard telecom bands, the system allows AFRL to interface IonQ’s on-site computing hardware with external heterogeneous QPUs and commercial optical channels without high transmission losses.
Simultaneously, the integration of free-space optics—governed by automated pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) systems—marks a step toward mobile and satellite-compatible defense quantum links. By maintaining entanglement routing across line-of-sight open-air paths, AFRL aims to evaluate quantum communication protocols in operational tactical scenarios where fixed fiber lines are unavailable.
The contract expands on a series of joint milestones between IonQ and AFRL, complementing the $54.5 million computing and networking research agreement signed in 2024, the deployment of an on-site trapped-ion quantum computing system at AFRL’s Rome facility, and the first remote photonic interconnect demonstration under DARPA’s HARQ program.
