Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Leghari has said the government is working to end the practice of charging consumers higher electricity rates for six months after their monthly consumption exceeds 200 units by even one unit.
Speaking during a Senate session on the impact of electricity tariffs on consumers of power distribution companies, Leghari said the government was considering raising the 200-unit threshold to 250 units.
The issue was raised by Senator Abid Sher Ali, who said consumers using 201 units could face a sharp increase in their per-unit tariff, effectively being charged at a higher consumption slab.
He questioned how consumers using just one unit above the threshold could be billed at rates associated with 400 units. Responding to the concern, Leghari said the government was working to eliminate the six-month additional charges imposed on consumers who cross the 200-unit limit.
He said the number of consumers using fewer than 200 units had reached around 20 million. However, he argued that providing discounts to all such consumers would not be appropriate, as some households use solar power to keep their grid electricity consumption low.
Leghari said the government would focus relief on consumers living below the poverty line.
