A South African writer and entrepreneur who goes by the pen name Coral Hart turned one of the worst moments in her career into a publishing empire worth over R16 million.
According to a report, when an international publishing house cut her ghostwriting contracts in favour of automated writing tools, she did not walk away from the industry. Instead, she chose to understand the technology that had replaced her, and then use it on her own terms.
Over several months, she built a personalised digital workflow aimed at increasing her publishing output rather than spending heavily on digital marketing. The result: more than 370 books released under 21 different pseudonyms, generating roughly one million US dollars in royalties and sales in under a year.
How Coral Hart built her AI publishing system
Her process is far from a simple "press generate and publish" approach. Coral Hart found that different AI platforms each bring something distinct to the table. One tool handled dialogue well, another was better suited to plot structure and pacing, while a third excelled at writing descriptive romantic scenes. Before any tool produces a single line of text, she completes full story outlines, develops character profiles, and sets the tone for the manuscript.
She has been clear that large language models left to their own devices produce poor-quality writing. Structured direction is what makes the difference. With detailed chapter outlines in place, she was able to move from generating individual paragraphs to producing full manuscript frameworks far more efficiently.
The machine-generated draft is only the starting point. Each manuscript goes through multiple rounds of structural editing using digital tools, followed by human editorial review. Real editors rewrite clumsy phrasing, cut repetitive language, and strip out the flat, robotic tone that AI writing is known for.
From bestseller lists to training other authors
The strategy paid off beyond sales figures. One of her titles reached competitive international bestseller lists, a benchmark that even traditionally published authors struggle to achieve.
Coral Hart has since built on her framework to create PlotProse, a training platform designed to help other independent authors develop their own technology-assisted publishing workflows. She is also developing dedicated software to support writers who want to work at scale without relying on major publishing houses.
Her story is a reminder that South African digital creators can compete directly in global entertainment markets, without corporate backing, by pairing creative skill with the tools already available to anyone willing to invest the time to learn them.
