Crystal Palace crisis deepens as Pierre Sage edges towards Selhurst Park exit
Crystal Palace look to be moving towards another managerial change, and the broader picture is not flattering. According to iNews, Pierre Sage’s short reign has been shaped by confusion in the boardroom, recruitment failures and a defence that has unravelled at alarming speed.
The immediate trigger was Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United. It was the kind of result that leaves little room for excuses. “The atmosphere was toxic, the fans had begun to turn” and, in a stadium like Selhurst Park, that matters. Once the crowd senses drift, the job gets harder by the week.
There is already a split around the club over how much blame should sit with Sage and how much belongs upstairs. The report states that “the prevailing mood is that Sage has been badly let down by chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Matt Hobbs.” That is a serious charge, and one that goes beyond a few bad afternoons on the pitch.

Transfer failures leave Crystal Palace exposed
Palace can point to one major achievement in the market, they kept Adam Wharton. In a summer when many expected him to leave, that counts. Dean Henderson was also tied to a new contract. Still, keeping one key player is not the same as building a functional squad.
The article describes “A disastrous summer”, and it is hard to argue. Palace failed to replace Maxence Lacroix over the long term after his move to Chelsea. They missed out on Malick Fofana, a player Sage “desperately wanted” after working with him at Lyon, before Sunderland completed a late hijack. The defensive issues had already been simmering after Marc Guehi’s January departure, and the solutions were hardly convincing.
Axel Disasi arrived on loan, 18-year-old Honest Ahanor was brought in, and Takehiro Tomiyasu has only managed two starts because of fitness issues. That is not stable planning, it is patchwork.
Matt Hobbs came in with a strong reputation, particularly for data-driven recruitment and South American market work. So far, none of it has landed. Palace spent £73m on Dwight McNeil, Anan Khalaili, Quinten Timber and Zavier Gozo, but the returns have been thin. Brennan Johnson was sold at a £20m loss after only six months, while Jorgen Strand Larsen has scored just four goals since arriving from Wolves. Those numbers are bleak for a club trying to establish itself in the top half.
Defensive collapse has defined Pierre Sage tenure
If the recruitment has been poor, the defending has been worse. The report uses a cutting comparison, saying that when Peta described Palace mascot Phoenix as looking “frightened, disoriented and panicked”, “they could very well have been talking about Palace’s back line.” It is brutal, but accurate enough.
The 5-0 defeat at Brighton left Palace with “statistically the worst defence in the Premier League”. More tellingly, it was not treated as a freak result. It was viewed as evidence of a recurring structural problem, particularly within a back three that has looked unstable with Chris Richards in the middle and Disasi struggling to settle.
There have been warning signs elsewhere too. Palace showed “more positive signs in Europe against Besiktas” and still failed to protect a lead against 10 men. That says plenty. A side lacking confidence can drop points. A side lacking organisation keeps repeating the same mistakes.
Board doubts grow despite sympathy for Palace boss
Sage has not been without sympathy. He inherited a complicated situation and, by most accounts, handled it with calm. “An impressive attitude” is how the piece frames that side of his tenure. Jean-Philippe Mateta was injured at the start of the season after trying to force his way out by disputing the validity of the final year of his deal. Ismaila Sarr then saw a move to Liverpool collapse, which reportedly left him devastated.
Sage is also said to be “well-liked”. He kept several members of Oliver Glasner’s backroom staff in place to reduce disruption and is viewed as easier-going than his predecessor. All of that speaks well of him as a person. In football management, though, being reasonable only buys time if the team is improving.
Even Palace’s better results came with warnings attached. The win at Fulham owed something to poor defending from the hosts, and the victory over Nottingham Forest carried controversy after Jefferson Lerma’s goal stood despite “an apparent handball”. In other words, the good moments were never quite solid enough to shift the mood.
Next Crystal Palace manager shortlist already taking shape
That is why attention has already turned to the next appointment. The key line is simple, “Sage was never the board’s first choice.” That matters now because it suggests the club entered this process without total conviction. And when results slide, weak conviction usually collapses first.
iNews says Sean Dyche is the early frontrunner, with Thomas Frank also in the frame. Kieran McKenna is mentioned as a candidate, while Victor Matos would require sizeable compensation to prise him away from Swansea. Palace already paid around £4m to take Sage from Lens, which makes the speed of this likely ending even more damaging.
If he goes now, Sage will become “one of the shortest-serving Palace managers in history after Frank de Boer and Sam Allardyce.” That is not where Palace wanted to be. More importantly, it raises a larger question about the people making the decisions. A club can survive one bad appointment. Repeated misfires point to a deeper problem.
Our View
This is what infuriates people. Every season there is talk about plans, process and progress, and then it all falls apart under the slightest pressure. If Sage was not the first choice, why was he appointed? If the squad clearly needed defensive surgery, why was it patched together with loans, short-term fixes and hopeful gambles?
There is a limit to how long supporters can be expected to swallow this cycle. Sell well, talk smart, spend badly, sack the manager, reset, repeat. Palace fans are not stupid. They can see when a team is undercooked and underprepared. They can also see when a manager is carrying the blame for failures that began long before kick-off.
That does not mean Sage is free of responsibility. The team has looked chaotic, especially at the back, and results have been nowhere near good enough. But the idea that changing the man in the dugout fixes everything is fantasy. If the recruitment is this erratic and the strategy this muddled, the next manager walks into the same mess.
What stings most is that Palace should know better by now. The club has enough experience at this level to avoid these self-inflicted wounds. Instead, it feels like another season where ambition has been undercut by indecision. Supporters deserve clarity, competence and a team that looks coached. Right now, they are getting noise, excuses and a defence that collapses whenever it is asked a serious question.
