The government has backed an amendment to the Criminal Code that would limit the powers of appeal courts.
The bill also includes other controversial provisions, including the possibility of disclosing a person's nationality in criminal proceedings and an explicit obligation for prosecutors not to withhold evidence in court that could support the defence.
Justice Minister Jeroným Tejc said after the cabinet meeting that the amendment addressed the most pressing problems in criminal proceedings and was intended to make them more efficient. A comprehensive revision of the law is expected to be drafted in around a year and a half.
