Bangkok says hosting WorldPride 2030 would create lasting support for LGBTQIA+ communities across Asia, with funding, activism programmes and regional partnerships extending beyond the event itself.
Bangkok has pledged to use WorldPride 2030 as a platform to strengthen LGBTQIA+ visibility, representation and cooperation across Asia, as it bids to bring the global event to the region for the first time.
As the official applicant and proposed host city, Bangkok Pride says its vision goes beyond a celebration, aiming instead to create opportunities for activists and community organisations from across Asia to engage in international conversations, build partnerships and access long-term support.
The bid comes at a time when LGBTQIA+ communities across Asia face very different social, legal and political realities. Organisers say WorldPride 2030 would provide a shared space where diverse voices can be heard and where regional cooperation can be strengthened.
Raymond Phang, co-founder of ShanghaiPRIDE, said a successful bid would represent a significant moment for LGBTQIA+ communities across the continent.
“Bringing WorldPride to Asia for the first time would be more than a celebration,” he said. “It would be a powerful moment for LGBTQ+ Asians to see ourselves represented on a global stage and for the world to hear the diverse voices, stories and struggles of our communities.”
To widen participation, the bid proposes a Bangkok WorldPride Activist Fellowship programme offering at least 150 fully funded places for frontline activists. Organisers say a minimum of 70 per cent of places would be allocated to participants from the Global South, helping remove financial barriers to attendance.
Regional voices would also help shape a week-long Human Rights Forum, which would contribute to the proposed Bangkok Action 2030 framework. The initiative would focus on issues including legal recognition, family rights, bodily autonomy, health equity, digital rights and protections for human rights defenders.
Another proposal is the creation of a Pride City Network Asia community hub, designed to strengthen links between Pride organisations, local authorities and LGBTQIA+ groups throughout the region.
The bid builds on Thailand’s recent progress on equality. In January 2025, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, a milestone organisers say demonstrates the impact of sustained community-led advocacy.
Ann Chumaporn, core team lead of Bangkok’s WorldPride 2030 bid, said the event could serve as an important focal point for regional solidarity at a time when LGBTQIA+ rights face challenges in many parts of the world.
Organisers also say the proposed legacy would extend well beyond 2030. Plans include establishing a permanent Pride City Network Fund using a share of operational surpluses to support micro-grants, capacity-building initiatives and emergency assistance for human rights defenders across Asia.
The bid further proposes creating a Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) Museum and Archive to preserve and increase visibility for Asian LGBTQIA+ histories.
Ultimately, Bangkok’s ambition is for WorldPride 2030 to leave a lasting impact across the region, helping communities build stronger networks, access greater resources and continue advancing equality long after the celebrations have ended.
