What Melania Trump Just Did Is Really Quite Remarkable
Just perhaps not for the reason she thinks.

I don’t know much about ceasefires, but I do know that before Friday morning, I’ve never had the urge to call one “so random.” Thanks to Melania Trump, that has changed. Because that’s the only way to describe the news that our first lady brokered an agreement between Russia and Ukraine that will allow residents a pathway out of an occupied city: random! In a year that has already featured many impressively random antics from Melania, she has somehow managed to out-random herself.
According to the New York Times, Melania Trump has secured a ceasefire between Russian and Ukrainian forces in Oleshky, a southern Ukrainian city that has been occupied by Russia since February 2022, leaving its citizens cut off from food and medical aid. This agreement will allow them to leave “through a designated safe passageway,” according to Melania. Each sentence in the article is more eye-popping than the next. “It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible,” Melania asserted through a statement. It was abundantly clear!? To whom? Literally how did she get involved with this? Melania was joined in her lobbying efforts by none other than Pope Leo XIV. Sure, yes, the first lady and the pope teaming up to sweet-talk Vladimir Putin, very normal stuff. This all comes as her husband, President Donald Trump, has been defending Putin and calling for Ukrainians to replace their president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Representatives from both Ukraine’s parliament and the Kremlin credited Melania for her contributions, so this is at least somewhat real. Yet nothing about it sounds true. “Both sides formally recognized her as an intermediary and in writing, and they gave her the power to negotiate this ceasefire,” one of Melania’s advisers, Marc Beckman, told the Times. “And she’s been working tirelessly now for over a month to make sure that this occurs.” Melania, working tirelessly? Can anyone even picture that?
Melania is not especially known as someone who accomplishes a lot. What she is more known for, at least to me, is wanting to be seen as someone who accomplishes a lot, a quality that was very much on display in the Melania documentary that was released earlier this year. “Mrs. Trump has ramped up her own diplomatic efforts,” the article goes on to say. Trump himself called her “the next Eleanor Roosevelt” at a rally this week. Is she angling for the Nobel Peace Prize? To show people that, now that Kimberly Guilfoyle’s gone, there’s a new boss bitch diplomat to contend with? With Melania, you can usually figure out the answer by imagining the most petty possible reasoning, though not always the most obvious: I wouldn’t assume that she intended to humiliate Trump with this ceasefire, as some outlets have suggested. But she probably does want to humiliate someone. As long as the residents as Oleshky are safe, maybe for now it doesn’t matter whom.
