TGL isn’t easing into its third season.
Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are all part of the opening-day doubleheader Dec. 27 at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, giving the indoor golf league about as much star power as it could pack into one Sunday afternoon.
Koepka will make his TGL debut with expansion Motor City Golf Club against McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf at 1 p.m. on ESPN. Two hours later, Woods and Jupiter Links Golf Club will face defending champion Los Angeles Golf Club on ABC in a rematch of last season’s championship.
It’s another step for a league that has spent its first two seasons tinkering not only with the competition but with what it feels like to actually be inside the SoFi Center.

TGL to keep innovating in year 3
TGL’s inaugural season drew fans from across the United States and 21 international countries to the approximately 1,500-seat arena on the campus of Palm Beach State College. By Year 2, the league was looking for ways to make that intimate setting even more intimate.
That meant putting more fans closer to the golfers, adding roughly 50 greenside seats in the lower bowl and expanding the green.
It also meant allowing fans in the building to hear what viewers at home could already hear. Attendees were given the option to listen to the ESPN broadcast, SiriusXM Radio or the audio from either team, bringing the conversations and trash talk between players directly into the stands.

TGL also expanded its hospitality footprint, while adding receptions, player Q&As and fireside chats around matches, all in an attempt to better engage fans.
Koepka’s debut with the new Detroit franchise provides one draw. McIlroy provides another. Then comes Woods and Jupiter Links against the team that ended its second season.
Los Angeles, with Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and Sahith Theegala, swept Jupiter 2-0 in last season’s championship. Woods played in the final alongside Kim and Max Homa.

TGL to battle with NFL
There’s another opponent TGL will face Dec. 27: the NFL.
The league went head-to-head with NFL games on opening day last season and produced a television rating 30 percent higher than its average during the inaugural season.
Putting Koepka, McIlroy and Woods on the marquee gives TGL its best possible counterprogramming.
And for Woods, the afternoon could carry even more significance. The 15-time major champion has not played competitive golf since the TGL final in March. Unless he returns alongside son Charlie at the PNC Championship the weekend before, Dec. 27 could mark his first competitive appearance in nine months.
