The award recognises the hotel’s commitment to preserving a 115-year-old landmark in the heart of Malioboro.
Grand Hotel De Djokja has received Exquisite Media’s “Best Indonesian Heritage Hotel” award. The award recognises the hotel’s dedication to caring for and preserving a historic landmark that has been part of Yogyakarta’s story, and Indonesia’s, for 115 years.
Established in 1911, the hotel has lived through many chapters of history and change. Over the years, it has been known as Grand Hotel De Djokja, Asahi Hotel, Hotel Merdeka, Hotel Garuda, Hotel Natour Garuda, Hotel Inna Garuda and Grand Inna Malioboro, before reclaiming the name that reflects its historic roots.
Each name marks a distinct chapter in the nation’s journey. Through them all, the hotel has remained part of Yogyakarta’s historic landscape. Located in the heart of Malioboro, Grand Hotel De Djokja has witnessed the city’s transformation while preserving stories connected to Indonesia’s struggle, history and everyday life.
The award is a source of pride and a reminder of the responsibility shared by everyone at Grand Hotel De Djokja. Andreas Kahl, General Manager, said: “Under InJourney Hospitality and The National Heritage Collection brand, we carry the responsibility of safeguarding this historic legacy with the utmost care. Every effort to preserve the building, honour the values it embodies and create meaningful experiences for our guests reflects our commitment to keeping this heritage relevant for generations to come.”
For Grand Hotel De Djokja, the recognition is more than an achievement. It is an honour that deepens the sense of belonging and responsibility felt towards a legacy that has grown alongside Yogyakarta. This historic building is part of Malioboro’s identity and a source of shared pride. Caring for it means preserving collective memory, honouring the passage of history and keeping its stories alive as the city continues to evolve.
Behind its classical architecture, Grand Hotel De Djokja offers a stay shaped by comfort, thoughtful service and a strong sense of place. Guests staying in the Heritage rooms, including the Soedirman Suite, can enjoy experiences that bring together modern comforts and the culture and history of Yogyakarta.
Mornings begin with breakfast at ROSO, featuring à la carte selections and a buffet served from the signature heritage trolley. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy complimentary minibar items, light refreshments for lunch and afternoon tea featuring Javanese teas from Sila, exclusive blends and variations of traditional kopi tubruk. As evening falls, Djati Lounge offers a welcoming setting in which to unwind with cocktails and light bites.
Guests can discover Yogyakarta from a different perspective with a ride in the hotel’s own andong, inspired by the elegant traditional carriages of the early 1900s. They can also join the daily hotel history tour at 4 pm or arrange a private tour through their butler. Within the privacy of their suite, a specially curated bathing ritual offers a moment of relaxation and personal indulgence.
Throughout their stay, a dedicated butler is available to assist guests and arrange experiences according to their preferences. Together, these offerings capture the distinctive character of a heritage hotel in the heart of the city: a historic setting carefully preserved, paired with the comforts and attentive service expected today. Yogyakarta’s culture comes to life through local flavours, traditions and journeys, all presented with modern elegance and a sense of calm.
Guided by the philosophy “Heritage Legacy, Timeless Luxury”, Grand Hotel De Djokja will continue to honour its history while welcoming every guest with the warmth of Yogyakarta. The Exquisite Media award strengthens the hotel’s resolve to protect this landmark in the heart of Malioboro and ensure its legacy can be experienced by generations to come.
