Residents of Secunda in Mpumalanga were left rattled after a venomous snake native to North America turned up in their neighbourhood, prompting urgent questions about exotic reptile ownership and the very real danger of a species that South African hospitals are ill-equipped to treat. A video shared by Boland Snake Removals 24/7 on Facebook on 25 October captured snake handler Hein Alberts carefully securing a Western diamondback rattlesnake, a species found naturally in the southwestern United States and Mexico, after it was spotted in the area. Alberts placed the animal into a secure container before the footage was shared online, where it quickly spread.

Venom risks and the lack of local antivenom

The concern goes well beyond the shock of spotting an unusual reptile. The Western diamondback's venom is both haemotoxic and proteolytic, meaning it damages blood and tissue simultaneously. Handlers and experts noted that South Africa does not routinely stock the specific antivenom required to treat a bite from this snake, making any encounter with the creature potentially fatal for the victim.

Wildlife specialists have also flagged the broader environmental risk. Should exotic reptiles like this one escape captivity and begin breeding in local conditions, the consequences for indigenous species and ecosystems could be severe and long-lasting.

The incident has renewed calls for stricter oversight of exotic reptile breeding and ownership in South Africa, with many online commenters questioning how a North American viper could end up wandering freely through a residential area in the first place. Social media users reacted with a mix of alarm, dark humour and genuine concern.

@Kat Godfrey asked plainly,

"What the hell is a rattlesnake doing there, and how did it get there?"

@Merlin Mouxs OG asked:

"Do we even have antivenom?"

Others were equally unsettled.

@Emerentia Robertson said:

"It is very lethal. I don't want to meet that snake at all."

@Craig Clifton said:

"That's scary."

@Estelle Erasmus offered a more colourful take:

"Keep those snakes in their own countries, please. You can already see what is happening in Paris and those places; the snakes are even worse."
