The New York Giants pulled off a massive upset in Sunday’s contest on the road against the Houston Texans. The 27-21 victory came in quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s first start with the franchise after being acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings and was his second consecutive impressive showing, after throwing for 243 yards in a single quarter of relief duty against the New Orleans Saints.
One analyst feels that this is the best McCarthy has looked thus far in his three-year career (he lost his entire rookie season to injury), and has looked better than both of the Vikings quarterbacks who passed him on the depth chart.
“This is the best I’ve seen McCarthy play in the NFL. And I will say it’s better than any game that you’ve seen out of a Minnesota quarterback this year. It’s crazy to me that you look at his age and now you’re kind of seeing him, you know, what he’s capable of, the best of what we saw at Michigan,” NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah said on the Move The Sticks podcast.

JJ McCarthy was great against the Texans. Self admitted overreaction: It’s not out the realm of possibility that the Giants could have a tough QB decision to make after the season.

“You’re seeing, I think he’s 23 years old, Jack, crazy young. And you saw him throw, playing on time, slot vertical to neighbors, driving deep outs, dime on a corner route. He’s hanging in versus pressure, you know, making throws with bodies all around him and in his face. I thought it was as good as I’ve seen JJ McCarthy. You talk about like the way Jared Goff plays.”
McCarthy has been so impressive, in fact, that one analyst sees a world in which he is the quarterback of the future rather than Jaxson Dart, who opened the campaign under center before a knee injury cost him his season.
“I think you saw the way he played in this game. You’re like, he has that ability to play like this. If JJ McCarthy plays like this in this brand of football for the rest of the year, I think the Giants could be looking at their long-term starting quarterback, which then begs the question, you’ve got another first-round quarterback who’s very young, Jackson Dart, who’s hurt. And I’m just telling you, if JJ plays like this, they’re going to have a tough decision to make there.”
The Giants have a bye week before facing a wounded Philadelphia Eagles squad.
