The South African creative industry is mourning the loss of SAFTA-winning screenwriter, actress, and entrepreneur Sibusisiwe Gugu Manqele, who passed away on Thursday, aged 35.
According to an official statement issued by her family, Manqele passed away following more than a week in hospital due to a cardiac condition.
Born in Ulundi, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Manqele made an indelible mark on the country's broadcasting landscape. As CEO of ContentWood and a prolific multidisciplinary artist, she helped shape some of South Africa’s most celebrated television productions, including Skeem Saam, Gomora, House of Zwide, and Umkhokha.
Throughout her career, she remained a steadfast advocate for authentic local narratives, championing the isiZulu language in both her writing and voice work. Her on-screen achievements included a role in Intersexions 2, alongside theatrical work as assistant director for Pass Over at the Market Theatre.
Beyond her creative endevours, Manqele was an academic powerhouse and dedicated mentor. She held a BA Honours in Dramatic Arts, an Honours in Creative Writing, and a Master of Arts in Film and Television from Wits University.
At the time of her passing, she was a doctoral candidate in Culture, Communication and Media Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, researching the experiences of Black women showrunners and creative entrepreneurship. In a poignant turn of events, the university received her PhD examiners' reports just hours before her passing, confirming she had satisfied all requirements for her doctorate, subject to standard minor corrections.
Known for her deep faith, Manqele was described by her family as someone who loved God deeply, with her belief serving at the heart of everything she achieved.
"The family is deeply grateful for the love, support, and prayers received during this difficult time," the statement read.
