The Cleveland Browns are having one of their best seasons in recent memory, as they keep on finding ways to win with Deshaun Watson handling the starting quarterback job.
Cleveland’s success with Watson should keep him as the team’s QB1, but the Browns also still have an intriguing mix behind the former Clemson Tigers star signal-caller. The AFC North team currently has Shedeur Sanders, rookie Taylen Green and the recently activated Dillon Gabriel on the QB depth chart.
On Monday, the Browns announced the return of Gabriel from the injured reserve, days before the team’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
“The Cleveland Browns have activated QB Dillon Gabriel (back) from injured reserve. To make room on the roster, the team waived TE Carsen Ryan,” the team announced on Monday via its official website.
Browns Activate Gabriel Days Before Steelers Rematch
Gabriel, who was put on the injured reserve before the start of the 2026 NFL season with a back injury, was previously labeled as “designated to return” and started practicing with the Browns again on Oct. 6, and was activated just a day before the 21-day deadline lapsed.
Cleveland selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, ahead of Sanders. He went 1-5 in six starts in his rookie season, while passing for 937 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions.
At 5-2, Cleveland is looking to keep its solo lead atop the AFC North Division standings with another win over the Steelers this coming weekend. Cleveland defeated Pittsburgh in the first meeting in Week 4 at home, 27-24, with Watson passing for 268 yards on 24/44 pass completions with a touchdown and an interception.
