Bryson DeChambeau’s final appearance on the PGA Tour before his move to LIV Golf remains a painful memory for the two-time US Open champion. The 2022 Memorial Tournament marked his return to competitive play following hand surgery and a disastrous stretch at The Masters, yet the results did not match his optimistic pre-tournament comments. More than four years have passed since that week, and the golfer has not looked back on those days with fondness.
Leading into the event, DeChambeau had made only one cut all season at The Sentry in January. His form was fragile, highlighted by an 80 on Friday at The Masters that left him 12-over par after two rounds. He also lost two of three matches at the WGC-Matchplay, finishing at the bottom of his group. Despite these struggles, he told the media he felt ready to compete again.
Optimism Meets Reality on the Course
DeChambeau expressed hope ahead of the first round, stating, “I’m actually excited. It’s been a long time coming.” He went further, telling reporters, “Look, do I know I can finish out the week? Yeah. Do I know that I can contend? Yes. Do I know that I can finally enjoy golf again? Yes. That’s a big step for me and my health and my mental state.”
That confidence vanished quickly on the course. According to Yardbarker, the golfer got off to a poor start by posting a score of 76 on Thursday. The gap between his mental readiness and his physical execution was stark. Golf Digest reported he admitted his game was far from optimal, stating, “My golf swing is a wreck,” he said. The contrast between his public statements and his performance defined the week.
Despite the bad score, he tried to find a silver lining in the emotional return to competition. He noted that while he hated the golf, the emotional side of being back in a competitive environment was positive. However, the tournament did not serve as the launchpad he needed. It stands as the final chapter of his PGA Tour career, ending not with a victory or a strong finish, but with a struggle that foreshadowed his eventual departure.
The Financial and Strategic Shift Ahead
The events at the Memorial set the stage for a massive shift in DeChambeau’s career trajectory. His contract situation with LIV Golf has become complex, with a bankruptcy judge recently rejecting 19 LIV contracts, including DeChambeau’s. According to Yardbarker, LIV still owes him $5.77 million based on their filings. ESPN reported that he “remains committed to LIV Golf” and is working behind the scenes toward a new version of the league.
Speculation about his financial future has grown alongside these legal filings. Charlie Stebbings and Charlie Methven explored on the October 25 Business of Sport podcast if DeChambeau might gain from BC Partners’ suggested $300 million LIV investment.
DeChambeau had previously been clear about his stance on leaving the PGA Tour. “For me, I personally don’t think that at this point in time I’m in a place in my career where I can risk things like that,” he said during the Memorial. That sentiment contrasts sharply with the current landscape where he is deeply involved in LIV 2.0 planning. The hosts on the podcast claimed that “all the serious golfers other than Bryson are out,” though this remains their opinion rather than a confirmed roster list.
What the Future Holds for the Golfer
The path forward for DeChambeau involves navigating a league in flux. With players like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton having left, and others like Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith yet to confirm their status for LIV 2.0, the roster remains uncertain. The Business of Sport podcast suggested the new iteration could include a mix of experienced players and journeymen alongside DeChambeau.
BC Partners’ connection to DeChambeau’s agency, GSE Worldwide, adds another layer to the story. The firm invested in GSE in 2024, and a spokesperson told Front Office Sports that BC Partners acts as a lender. However, the financial details were not made public, and GSE declined to say if DeChambeau is personally involved in those specific talks. This opacity continues to fuel questions about where the money flows and who benefits most from the league’s restructuring.
DeChambeau’s future remains tied to the success of LIV 2.0. While he is one of the few players yet to confirm his plans for 2027, the league faces an uncertain future as more players announce departures. The question of whether he will return to the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour remains open, but his commitment to the Saudi-backed league appears firm despite the legal and financial hurdles.
