The Minnesota Timberwolves took on the Cleveland Cavaliers in their fourth game of the season, coming off of three wins that helped them surpass the Brooklyn Nets in winning percentage all-time. Coach Chris Finch’s team has the makings of a title contender so far this season and they’ve done it amid an Anthony Edwards injury situation that resolved in time for him to play against Cleveland.
The Timberwolves’ high-scoring ways have also included plenty of defense, helping them to set a mark not seen in 40 years.
Minnesota is just the third team in NBA history to score 121+ points and allow less than 100 points to their opponents through the first three games of a season. They have scored 121.0 PPG so far and given up 97.7 PPG to their opponents.

The 1982-83 Supersonics are in the same boat, having scored 125.0 PPG that season and given up 98.7 PPG to their opponents. The 1973-74 Trail Blazers are also in the same class, having scored 122.0 PPG and given up 98.0 PPG to their opponents.
The Wolves’ numbers come from a small sample size, but there is optimism for an NBA championship run considering how well new addition LaMelo Ball has meshed with Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels and the rest of his teammates.
The Timberwolves look like a team with staying power, and their depth is a big reason why. Jonathan Kuminga has added athleticism and stability while Ball has become a take-charge point guard whose infectious personality and free-flowing style have rubbed off on his teammates. Finch’s team is showing the NBA world how it’s done early in the season, and it seems like things are only going to get better from here on out.
