The Houston Texans need some change to reignite the spark found to get back on track after the bye week.
Something needs to be shaken up. It won't be the coaching staff.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed on Monday, after the overtime loss to the New York Giants, that the coaching staff will remain unchanged entering the bye week. This included offensive coordinator Nick Caley, offensive line coach Cole Popovich, defensive coodinator Matt Burke and special teams coordinator Frank Ross.
“We are where we are right now,” Ryans said. “Where we are, it's not good enough.”
Currently sitting at 2-5 heading into Week 8, the Texans have already made some staff changes. After a 0-4 start, Ryans, who previously held the title, took over defensive play-calling from Burke. Last season, following an 0-3 start, he gave up the job and allowed Burke to have a more substantial role.
DeMeco Ryans, when asked if he planned to make changes during bye, responded “I’m not there yet.”

Three games into the year and the defense has only marginally improved, despite featuring nine starters from the No. 1-ranked unit a season ago. Following a strong performance from J.J. McCarthy in his debut with New York, Houston now ranks in the middle of the pack in nearly every category. Among scoring units, the Texans are allowing 24.3 points per game and remain one of the worst tackling teams in the NFL.
That's not coming from stats, either. Those are direct words from general manager Nick Caserio.
"We lost four games on the last possession," Caserio said Monday. "What are some of the things we can do on the margin to potentially improve to see if we can finish those games? We're 1-4 in one-score games, whatever it was. We were able to pull out the Jacksonville game because we executed critical situations. It's where we are. There's no reason to mope around and wallow in our sorrows."
The Texans return following the bye week for a road trip to take on the winless Los Angeles Chargers.
