Peter Ifeanyi Ogbebor: A brilliant mind gone too soon

Some deaths are difficult to comprehend. This is not just because they come suddenly, but because the life they interrupt is one so full of promise, ideas and possibilities. The sudden passing of Dr Peter Ifeanyi Ogbebor at just 62, on Monday, October 19, 2026, my birthday, is one such loss. At an age when he still had so much to offer his family, the academic community and society, his departure is particularly painful.

Peter was a remarkable man: intelligent, quick-witted, tenacious and deeply cerebral. He had a mind that was always questioning, probing, and reaching for deeper understanding. He was a top-flight intellectual whose brilliance was evident not merely in what he knew, but in how he thought, reasoned and engaged with the world around him.

As a neighbour and family friend, I had the privilege of knowing Peter beyond his professional titles. What stood out was the man himself: sharp, engaging and determined. Conversations with him could be stimulating, and his quick wit made him an interesting person to be around. He was the kind of person whose intelligence left an impression long after a conversation had ended.

Peter was, in many respects, self-taught. He possessed that rare combination of natural intelligence, curiosity and the discipline to keep learning. He did not simply acquire knowledge; he worked at it, questioning assumptions and developing his understanding through personal effort. His life demonstrated that education is not merely about certificates, but also about the determination to learn, think independently and understand.

Peter’s professional journey reflected his commitment to continuous growth. He worked as an auditor with the then National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) until retirement, building a substantial record of professional experience and service.

But retirement did not mark the end of his productive years. Rather, Babcock University opened a new chapter in his life, providing a platform for him to apply his intellect and experience in academia. He became an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance, contributing through teaching, research and scholarship.

His transition from auditing to academia was particularly remarkable. Babcock University gave him a second wind, allowing him to remain intellectually engaged and productive.

Peter was more than a lecturer. He was an author and researcher who produced numerous scholarly articles for academic journals. His commitment to academic writing reflected a mind interested not only in acquiring knowledge but also in advancing understanding and contributing to the wider body of scholarship in his field.

Perhaps one of Peter’s most enduring academic legacies will be found in the postgraduate, master’s and PhD students he taught and supervised. He was firm in his expectations, insisting on rigour, discipline and intellectual seriousness, but he was also compassionate and always willing to help.

His approach to supervision balanced high standards with understanding, guidance and a healthy sense of humour. He understood that scholarship required discipline, but that students also needed encouragement, patience and support to find their feet. For the students who passed through his tutelage, he was more than a supervisor; he was a mentor who challenged them to do better while remaining available to help them along the way. Their academic journeys and eventual accomplishments will remain an important part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Yet, beyond the auditor, professor, author and researcher was a husband, father, neighbour and friend.

Peter was the husband of Cynthia and the father of three children: Gloria, Amen and Praise. For them, his sudden departure represents a loss that no professional achievement or public tribute can adequately describe.

They have lost a husband and father whose presence was woven into the ordinary moments, conversations and experiences that make family life meaningful.

As a family friend, my thoughts are especially with Cynthia and the children. Words can offer comfort, but they cannot fill the space left by someone so central to a family’s life. I can only hope that the love they shared, the memories they created and the knowledge that Peter lived a meaningful life will offer them strength in the difficult days ahead.

His passing is also a reminder of life’s unsettling unpredictability. We share conversations with neighbours and friends, exchange ideas, make plans and assume there will always be another opportunity to talk, laugh or catch up. Then, suddenly, that opportunity disappears.

A life should not be measured by its length alone, but also by its substance: the work done, the knowledge shared, the relationships nurtured and the lives touched.

By these measures, Peter leaves behind a legacy worth celebrating.

Rest well, Peter. Your time with us was cut short, but the memory of your remarkable mind, your scholarly contributions and the life you lived will endure.

May your soul rest in perfect peace!
