Serbian voters turned out in record numbers on October 25 in snap parliamentary elections, marking the biggest threat to populist President Aleksandar Vučić’s decade-long rule. Driven by a massive student-led protest movement that formed following a deadly 2024 train station collapse in Novi Sad, early morning voter turnout more than doubled compared to the previous election. The high stakes drew long lines across the country, with even Vučić waiting nearly two hours to cast his ballot. A potential victory for the student movement could signal a major political shift in the Balkans and set a blueprint for youth-led political movements across Europe.
