Overview
AI-powered search is changing how people discover information, making website clicks less predictable for businesses.
Traditional SEO still matters, but original research, useful content, and credible sources help websites stand out.
Businesses should measure search visibility, audience engagement, and conversions to understand the impact of AI search.
A website can help answer a search without earning a single click. This is the new challenge for businesses. Pew Research Center analyzed the browsing activity of about 900 US adults in March 2025 and published its findings in July 2025.
People clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary. Without a summary, the share was 15%. The study does not prove that summaries caused the drop, but it also covers one country and one month. Still, the gap points to a shift that businesses should watch.
How Search is Changing
For years, search engines worked like librarians. They pointed people to pages that answered their questions. People read the list and clicked the pages that looked useful.
AI search tools change that routine. Some tools collect facts from several sources and write a direct answer. This happens in Google’s AI summaries and in chat tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. Each platform works in its own way.
Businesses now face a new problem. Their content can shape an AI answer without bringing a single visitor to their site. The old question was whether people would click a link. The new question is whether a business offers information worth finding, citing, and trusting.
Why Traditional SEO Still Matters
Google has addressed the question directly. In May 2026, it published a guide to its AI search features. The message was plain. Optimizing for these features is still SEO. The guide says special files are not needed. Pages rewritten for machines are not needed either.
No shortcut guarantees a place in an AI answer. Two points receive the most attention. Pages must be reachable by search engines. Unique and useful content matters more than any other tip in the guide. The advice covers Google's own features. Other AI tools may behave differently.
The basics are similar to keeping a shop open and easy to find. Pages should load fast, work on phones, and use clear headings. These steps help search engines find and understand a page. They do not guarantee visibility. They also do not make content stand out.
Why Original Content Gains Value
AI makes ordinary information cheap. That raises the value of information that is hard to copy. Two articles about transcription software show the difference. One lists features copied from company websites. The other tests five tools on the same recording. It counts the mistakes. It then names the best tool for students and the best for journalists.
An AI tool can summarize the first article from widely available facts. It cannot reliably produce the results of the second. A guess may be wrong. Real findings give readers something to check and a reason to trust the source.
A simple test applies to every page. What does it say that a general summary cannot? The answer might be original data, a customer story, a lesson from a mistake, or an honest opinion backed by evidence. Originality alone is not enough. The content must also be accurate and useful.
The Value of Content Depends on the Question
Not every search calls for the same kind of content. The table shows where a short summary falls short.
Effort spent on the second and third rows tends to pay off most.
What Businesses Should Do
Four priorities cover most of the work. The first is getting to the point. A page should give the direct answer near the top and add depth below.
The second is credibility. Pages should name the author, state why that person knows the subject, and back claims with sources. Anonymous pages can still be good. Clear authorship helps readers judge.
The third is ease of use. Fast loading, a tidy layout, and a clean phone view matter to people and search engines alike. The fourth is relevance. Content should address problems the audience actually has, not only topics with high search numbers.
Two practices carry risk. The first is using AI to mass-produce articles without adding value. If everyone asks the same tools the same questions, everyone publishes the same answers. AI can help with research and drafting. People must still check the facts. The knowledge and judgement should come from the author.
The second is manufacturing brand mentions to influence AI search. Google says seeking fake mentions is less helpful than it seems. Its spam systems work to filter them out. Mentions earned through real coverage and real communities carry far more credibility.
How to Measure Results
Visits alone do not tell the full story. Lower traffic is neither automatically fine nor automatically a problem. The effect on the business decides. Three measures give a clearer picture.
Discovery: Google Search Console shows impressions and clicks. Google has also begun rolling out reports on how often pages appear in its AI answers. These reports show impressions only. They do not show clicks. Some sites may not have access yet.
Quality: Do visitors stay, read, and return?
Results: Do visits lead to inquiries, sign-ups, or sales?
Asking AI tools questions in a given field offers a rough check. Three signals should be measured separately: a mention means the brand is named, a citation means a page is linked, and an outcome means a visit or sale follows.
Several questions, asked from time to time, reveal patterns. A single answer reveals little. Responses vary by person and by day. The results work as a hint, not proof.

What Comes Next
Search tools will keep changing. Platforms are sharing more data, which should ease measurement over time. Businesses that build first-hand knowledge now will hold material that summaries struggle to replace. Good SEO has always aimed to help people. AI has raised the standard for what counts as help.

Final Thoughts
The next shift may come from AI agents that act for people, not just answer them. Software that compares products, books services and makes purchases on a person's behalf would make machines both readers and buyers.
Google's May 2026 guide offered early advice on agents and called the area new and fast-changing. Businesses that watch how that guidance develops will be better placed to adapt.

FAQs
1. Does SEO still matter in the age of AI?
Yes. Google says optimizing for its AI search features is still SEO. Pages must be easy for search engines to reach, and the content must be useful and original. No shortcut guarantees a place in an AI answer.
2. Can a website help answer a search without getting a click?
Yes. AI tools can draw facts from several sources and write one answer. The reader may never visit the pages that were used. Pew Research Center found that people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. That study covers US adults in March 2025 only.
3. What kind of content stands out in AI search?
Content that a general summary cannot copy. Examples include original tests, customer stories, first-hand experience, and clear evidence. The content must also be accurate and useful. Originality alone is not enough.
4. How can businesses measure performance in AI search?
Google Search Console shows impressions and clicks. Google has also begun rolling out reports on how often pages appear in its AI answers. These reports show impressions only, and some sites may not have access yet. Businesses should also track visitor quality and results such as enquiries, sign-ups, or sales.
5. Is it safe to use AI to write content or to manufacture brand mentions?
AI can help with research and drafting. People must still check the facts and add their own knowledge. Mass-producing articles without adding value is risky. Fake brand mentions are risky too. Google says they offer little benefit, and its spam systems work to filter them out.
