Incognito Mode is Chrome's version of private browsing. It offers a bit of privacy by turning off browsing history and cookies. In other words, it saves very little locally.
Private browsing also comes with loads of misconceptions. It doesn't make your actions totally anonymous from your internet service provider (ISP), and websites can still see your IP address. You'd need a virtual private network (VPN) to get a higher level of online security.
While this makes Incognito Mode seem less useful than you might think, it still has practical uses beyond private browsing. I've listed my five favorite uses to help you, too.
Neutral search results and price listings
Fair answers for all
When you search for something using a search engine, your results are influenced by your location and past searches. Google, in particular, will feed you answers based on what it knows from your profile.
Searching while in Incognito Mode neutralizes this bias. For example, asking about the latest Google Pixel devices will likely bring up results from sites you visited before in your regular browsing window. Using Incognito Mode provides results that better match your inquiry, not your history.
In addition, airline and hotel prices are fairer on a private browsing tab. Some websites tend to artificially inflate rates based on perceived demand. An Incognito-level search eliminates this inflation by showing you what everyone else sees.
Dual account management and guest access
Use another account without logging out
This is for those with separate work and personal accounts. If your main browser is logged in to your social media account for work, you can turn on Incognito Mode to enter your personal account without logging out of your primary account.
The downside here is the potential need to go through two-factor authentication each time. Since Incognito Mode doesn't store login credentials, you'll have to enter them each time you browse privately.
Another practical use is guest access. When someone borrows your device to log in to their account, they can use Incognito Mode so you don't have to log out.
Bypass paywalls and reset article view limits
Better than paying for a subscription
I enjoy reading well-written articles, but not enough to pay for a monthly subscription. Most of the time, I only want to read a few articles from an online publication.
Fortunately, these publications let me view a limited number of articles for free. When I hit that limit, I turn to Incognito Mode.
Without cookies to refer to, private browsing resets the article view limit and lets me bypass the soft paywall. It gives me a couple more good reads in a given time period.
Troubleshoot broken web pages
Start with the extensions
I occasionally run into broken websites or pages that don't fully load. When that happens, I usually blame the ad blocker or one of my browser extensions first.
Instead of turning off the ad blocker and all my add-ons, I check the website in Incognito Mode. Depending on your browser settings, extensions are usually turned off by default in private browsing.
This method allows me to test web pages without messing with my browser settings or add-ons. If the site works in Incognito Mode, one of my extensions is to blame. If the site still fails to load, then the domain is malfunctioning.
Protect the recommendation algorithm
Don't let a rogue click ruin it
Nothing hurts your YouTube or social media algorithm more than watching something outside your usual interests and having that topic dominate your feed for days. I've experienced this too many times to count.
For instance, letting my child watch a YouTube Kids video in Incognito Mode would protect my algorithm from recommending similar content on my account. I wouldn't want Bluey videos taking up my homepage.
Similarly, secretly searching for gifts in a private browser prevents targeted ads from thinking I'm still looking for a specific item. One search for flowers would be enough for flower shop ads to follow me around the web and expose the surprise to my wife.
Incognito Mode is the gift that keeps on giving
Despite all the misconceptions surrounding Incognito Mode, its functionality goes beyond simply hiding browsing history. No matter which browser you use, its private browsing mode enables all the uses above.
My everyday browsing improved after I started treating Incognito Mode as a practical tool, rather than a private browser. The more I use Incognito Mode, the more uses I'll find for it.
