Keyed by the heroic performance of quarterback Brock Zanetell, Rose-Hulman's football team grabbed sole possession of first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings by holding off Hanover 27-20 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Zanetell, a 6-foot-2 junior, completed 21 of 38 passes for 239 yards and rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
The Engineers (5-2 overall) improved to 3-0 in the HCAC. Hanover (also 5-2 overall) dropped to 2-1. Mount St. Joseph is sandwiched between them at 3-1. Hanover handed MSJ its only conference setback earlier this season.
Now, the Engineers will play host to HCAC opponent Manchester (1-6 overall, 0-3 HCAC) for Senior Day at Cook Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday. Hanover will play host to conference foe Bluffton that day.
On Saturday, Alexander Marsteller was another productive rusher for Rose with 21 carries for 71 yards and a TD. Avery Cody was the top receiver with seven catches for 101 yards.
Rose-Hulman's defense was led by William Fleck with six tackles and one sack. Fleck now has 8.5 sacks this season, ranking him tied for fourth among all NCAA Division III players. Anthony Mauro also totaled six tackles and added one fumble recovery. Jack LeCrove and Joseph Coveliers also recorded one sack each for the Engineers.
Fleck's performance earned him the HCAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week honor, his second league honor of the season.
Fleck delivered a key fourth-quarter play in the Hanover win. The Panthers drove to set up an attempted 29-yard field goal with 1 minute, 32 seconds left in the game, but Fleck broke through the line and blocked the kick to seal Rose's win.
The Rose defense made its presence felt from the start on Saturday and limited Hanover to 79 total rushing yards, compared to 227 for the Engineers.
