The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into a shooting incident at ASCO Camp, Ajaokuta, which claimed the lives of two police officers on Friday, October 23.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.
The officers were identified as Corporal Amos Yusuf and Corporal Grace Onimisi, both serving at the Ajaokuta Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to the statement, the incident occurred around 9pm at the officers’ residential quarters in Ajaokuta.
Preliminary findings indicated that Yusuf, who had resumed night duty, left his duty post with his service AK-47 rifle and went to the residence of Onimisi.
He allegedly opened fire on her, inflicting gunshot wounds on her leg, shoulder and abdomen, before shooting himself with the same rifle.
The police said the incident was reported at 11.04pm, prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ajaokuta to lead a team of officers to the scene.
“Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains have been deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.
“An AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene as exhibits,” the statement said.
The command added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.
It said the circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive remained under investigation.
“The circumstances and motive remain subjects of investigation, and the command will not speculate on matters yet to be established,” the spokesperson said.
The Commissioner of Police assured the public that the command would provide verified updates as the investigation progressed.
