A friend of late star Matthew Perry says his legacy is "being there for other people", despite going through "a very hard time" in his own life.
Tim Harrington first met the Friends actor - who died in October 2023, aged 54 - in 2001 at a recovery meeting, and Matthew saved Tim from returning to a life spent living in his car by inviting him to move into his house.
The pair went onto become firm friends, and Tim still feels grateful to Matthew for changing the direction of his life twice.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning, he said: "You can be going through a very hard time and still be there for other people.
"And I think that's really his legacy.
"I think sometimes people forget that someone can be having a terribly hard time in their own life and still make an extraordinary difference in someone else's.
"That is really the norm in mutual aid groups.
"You've got people at different degrees, but they're always trying to help each other and support each other and prop each other up.
"Matty changed the direction of my life not once, but twice, and he wasn't a man who had everything figured out."
Tim wants people to remember what was "so right" about the Chandler Bing actor - who had struggles with alcohol and prescription drugs - rather than focus on his issues.
He added: "He was just trying to find his own way, just like the rest of us were, you know.
And that's what I wish people to understand.
"We spend so much time talking about what was wrong with Matthew that sometimes we forget to talk about what was so right about him.
Tim joked that he and Matthew became such strong friends, it was like being in "a throuple" alongside his wife.
He added: "It got to the point where when I did meet who would be my eventual wife that for a while it was a throuple.
"And I don't mean … to the point where it was like … it was hard to uncouple from Matthew, because we had such an intense relationship and did so many things.
"And we travelled, and I, you know, went on sets with him and was actually his on-set assistant for The Ron Clark Story, which was a great achievement for him.
"He was so proud of it.
"And it would come to the point where it was like … and we joked about it, my wife goes, 'It's either him or me.' "
