Chelsea Lead Alex Scott Race as Bournemouth Prepare Alex Scott Replacements
Chelsea have moved into a strong position in the chase for Alex Scott, with Bournemouth now advancing plans for life after one of their most important midfielders. According to TeamTalk, the south coast club are actively assessing alternatives as the prospect of a January exit gathers momentum.
The key line in this developing story is that Bournemouth are no longer simply braced for interest, they are planning around it. Club sources are said to believe Scott could leave in the winter window, and that has pushed recruitment work into a more urgent phase. Chelsea are described as “firm favourites ahead of Liverpool”, with Bournemouth “prepared to allow the midfielder to choose his next destination”.
That matters. When a selling club starts shaping the process around replacement targets, rather than solely around retention, it usually tells you where the market is heading. Scott remains highly valued internally, but Bournemouth’s actions suggest realism as much as resistance.
Bournemouth shortlist Kees Smit and Kenneth Taylor
The names coming into focus are Kees Smit and Kenneth Taylor, two Dutch midfielders who fit the profile Bournemouth appear to want if Scott departs. Tiago Pinto, described as the club’s president of football operations, is overseeing that work as Bournemouth “scour the market for suitable replacements”.
Smit appears to be particularly well liked. The report states that “The club are following the 20-year-old’s progress closely and believe a deal can be done with AZ Alkmaar.” It adds that he is “understood to be open to a move in January”, and that “a switch to the Vitality Stadium is believed to appeal to him.” For Bournemouth, that combination of talent, age, and attainable conditions is often decisive.

His current groin injury has not altered that interest. Bournemouth’s focus is clearly on suitability over the medium term, and Smit’s profile has made him “an attractive option for the Cherries as they consider how best to replace Scott should the England international move on.”
Taylor is also firmly on the radar. Now at Lazio after his January move, he has impressed in Serie A and is drawing wider attention. Bournemouth are not alone in tracking him, with Brighton also credited with interest. The fact he is already performing in a strong European league may increase confidence in his readiness, although it could equally make any deal more complicated.
There is another name worth noting too. Boca Juniors teenager Tomas Aranda has “caught Bournemouth’s eye” as they widen their search. The Argentina youngster is viewed as one for the future, and his inclusion underlines how broad Bournemouth’s review has become ahead of what could be a pivotal winter.
Chelsea in strongest position for January move
From Chelsea’s side, this is a pursuit that makes sense on multiple levels. The report says “Chelsea are huge admirers of Scott” and that he has now “emerged as Chelsea’s new top midfield target”. With Xabi Alonso keen to reshape the midfield following Enzo Fernandez’s summer sale, the club have clearly continued scanning the market for a player capable of adding quality, mobility and personality in central areas.
TeamTalk report that “it will take over £100million to lure him from Bournemouth in January.” That is an enormous valuation, especially in the middle of the season, but it is also a reflection of Scott’s age, homegrown status and standing inside the game. Bournemouth know they hold leverage, and if a sale is to happen, it will be on terms they believe reflect both the player’s potential and the timing of the deal.
There is a Liverpool angle in the source material, but Chelsea are the clear focus here because they are currently best placed. Momentum in transfer pursuits can shift quickly, yet the present picture is fairly clear, Chelsea are leading and Bournemouth are planning accordingly.
Contract offer keeps Bournemouth stance alive
That does not mean Bournemouth have given up. Far from it. The report says the club’s owner, Bill Foley, is “set to make another contract offer to Scott that would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history”. This follows the revelation that “Scott has already rejected one record-breaking offer from Bournemouth”.
Those details are important because they show Bournemouth are still trying to fight their corner. Internally, there remains hope that an improved package could yet change the picture. But once a player reaches this level of market demand, keeping him often becomes as much about project and ambition as salary.
For now, the situation looks finely balanced in theory, but more advanced in practice. Chelsea hold the initiative, Bournemouth are lining up Kees Smit and Kenneth Taylor, and Alex Scott’s future is shaping up to be one of the major Premier League stories heading towards January.
Our View
This feels like the kind of move Chelsea should be making. Alex Scott has the profile, the technical level and the ceiling to thrive in a side that still needs greater control and composure in midfield. If he truly is the “new top midfield target”, that is encouraging because it points to a more focused recruitment call rather than another scattergun chase.
The £100million-plus figure is huge, and nobody should pretend otherwise, but elite young English midfielders always carry a premium. If the club believe he can become a cornerstone player for years, then paying big now can still make sense. The bigger issue is making sure he arrives into a structure that helps him grow quickly and gives him a clear role.
There is also something promising in the timing. If Chelsea are serious and already “firm favourites”, then the groundwork may be stronger than it appears publicly. That matters in January, when deals can easily become slow, political and overpriced. Getting ahead of rivals is half the battle.
Scott looks like a footballer who would raise the technical standard of the squad straight away. He can carry the ball, connect midfield to attack and play with authority. If Chelsea land him, it would feel like a signing with purpose, and one that could age very well.
