Internationally acclaimed Wagnerian tenor Andreas Schager will perform at the Hungarian State Opera on November 15 as part of its Star Recitals with Piano concert series.
The Austrian singer will perform Robert Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love), songs by Richard Strauss, and excerpts from Wagner’s operas, the State Opera announced on Monday. He will be joined by Austrian pianist Donka Angatscheva and Russian violinist Lidia Baich.
The first half of the concert will feature Schumann’s Dichterliebe, a cycle of 16 songs set to poems by Heinrich Heine. The work traces the protagonist’s emotional journey from the hope of love to disillusionment, with the piano playing a crucial role not merely as accompaniment but as an independent expression of emotion.
Four songs by Richard Strauss will explore different facets of love, from hopes for a shared future and the excitement of a nighttime encounter to devoted gratitude, the opera house said.
The concert will conclude with excerpts from Wagner’s operas. The Grail Narrative from Lohengrin, Rienzi’s Prayer from Rienzi, and the Spring Song from Die Walküre will showcase the tenor’s lyrical and dramatic range. The program will also include Wolfram’s Song to the Evening Star from Tannhäuser.
Angatscheva and Baich will also perform a separate instrumental selection, featuring Grand Duos by Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt.
Schager began his career performing operettas and Mozart operas before establishing himself in the heroic tenor roles of Wagner and Strauss. He has appeared as Siegmund, Siegfried, Tannhäuser, and Parsifal at leading opera houses around the world. In 2016, he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Erik in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman.
In 2025, the Vienna State Opera awarded Schager the title of Kammersänger, an honorary distinction recognizing outstanding contributions to opera. Alongside his operatic performances, he regularly appears as a soloist in symphonic works by Beethoven, Mahler, and Schoenberg.
This year's competition received a record 265 valid applications from around the world.Continue reading
