Bitcoin and major altcoins often decline simultaneously when financial uncertainty triggers widespread selling. Although cryptocurrencies operate on different blockchains, shared liquidity conditions, leveraged trading, and investor sentiment can connect their price movements, particularly during periods of heightened market volatility.
October 2026 showed this relationship as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP experienced overlapping declines despite differences in their underlying networks.
Market Correlation Increases During Selloffs
Cryptocurrency correlations can strengthen when investors respond to common economic developments. An October analysis of Coinbase trading data found that Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana moved in the same direction during 16 of 18 trading sessions between October 1 and October 18.
Bitcoin and Ethereum recorded a correlation coefficient of 0.95, while Bitcoin and Solana showed 0.87. Over that period, Bitcoin declined 1.85%, compared with Ethereum's 10.30% and Solana's 11.92% losses. The findings reflect a limited observation period rather than permanent correlations.
Liquidations Amplify Market Declines
Leveraged futures positions can accelerate cryptocurrency selloffs when falling prices trigger forced liquidations. On October 24, Bitcoin briefly dropped below USD 80,000, triggering widespread derivatives liquidations.
CoinGlass data shows that approximately USD 436.44 million in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated within four hours, including USD 404.15 million in long positions.
Ethereum accounted for USD 136.72 million in liquidations, compared with Bitcoin's USD 158.45 million, despite Ethereum having a substantially smaller market capitalization. Such liquidation cascades can pressure multiple cryptocurrencies simultaneously as exchanges close leveraged positions.
Macroeconomic Uncertainty Drives Selling
Higher Treasury yields, inflation concerns, and weakening equity markets can reduce investor appetite for speculative assets. On October 12, Bitcoin declined 2.8% to USD 81,382, while Ethereum fell 4.6% to USD 2,425.
During the same period, Solana dropped 7.5%, XRP declined 6.4%, and Zcash lost 10.4%. Total cryptocurrency liquidations reached approximately USD 771 million over 24 hours, including USD 685.6 million in long positions.
ETF Outflows Add Institutional Pressure
Institutional fund movements can influence broader cryptocurrency sentiment. According to SoSoValue, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded USD 773 million in combined net outflows on October 22-23. Meanwhile, Ethereum ETFs registered approximately USD 220.60 million in weekly net withdrawals.
These movements reflected weaker institutional demand during the selloff, although ETF flows alone cannot explain every cryptocurrency's performance.
Final Thoughts
Bitcoin and altcoins may decline together because of shared macroeconomic pressures, leveraged positions, and changing liquidity conditions. However, smaller cryptocurrencies often experience larger percentage losses. Monitoring correlations, liquidation data, institutional flows, and trading volumes can help investors assess broader market risks before making investment decisions.

FAQs:
1. Why do Bitcoin and altcoins often fall together during market crashes?
Bitcoin and altcoins frequently decline together because they are influenced by shared liquidity conditions, investor sentiment, macroeconomic developments and leveraged trading activity. During market stress, widespread selling and forced liquidations can increase correlations across cryptocurrencies.
2. What is the correlation between Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana?
An October 2026 analysis reported a correlation coefficient of 0.95 between Bitcoin and Ethereum and 0.87 between Bitcoin and Solana during October 1–18. These figures indicate strong positive price correlations during the observed period, although correlations can change over time.
3. How do cryptocurrency liquidations affect Bitcoin and altcoin prices?
Liquidations occur when exchanges forcibly close leveraged positions that no longer meet margin requirements. On October 24, approximately USD 436.44 million in crypto positions were liquidated within four hours, potentially intensifying selling pressure across Bitcoin and altcoins.
4. How do Bitcoin ETF outflows influence the broader cryptocurrency market?
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately USD 773 million in combined net outflows on October 22–23, indicating reduced demand through these investment products. Sustained outflows can weigh on market sentiment and Bitcoin demand, potentially influencing altcoins, although they do not directly determine their prices.
5. Why do altcoins sometimes fall more sharply than Bitcoin during market stress?
Altcoins can experience larger percentage declines because many have thinner liquidity, smaller market capitalizations and greater exposure to speculative trading. During October's selloff, Solana and Ethereum recorded larger percentage losses than Bitcoin over the cited periods, demonstrating how market stress can affect cryptocurrencies differently.
