Austin Smotherman of the United States won the PGA Tour's Butterfield Bermuda Championship, a $6 million event shortened by high winds, after a playoff.
Smotherman beat Seamus Power of Ireland in the playoff at Port Royal Golf Course, a par-71 layout in Southampton, Bermuda, on the 26th local time.
High winds forced the cancellation of the final round, leaving the title to be decided on 54-hole scores. Smotherman and Power were tied at 16-under 197, sending them to a playoff that went three extra holes before Smotherman claimed the trophy.
The outcome came on the third extra hole at the par-3 16th. Both players had made par there in the first two playoff holes and remained locked together in the third. Smotherman hit an 8-iron tee shot to within 4.5 meters of the pin and saved par. Power, by contrast, found the rough left of the green and missed his par putt, settling for second place.
Smotherman, who won the Bank of Utah Championship three weeks ago, added this title for his second victory of the season and second of his career. The winner's share was $1.08 million, or about 1.43 billion won. The victory lifted him to 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, earning him spots in two $20 million signature events next year at Pebble Beach and Riviera.
Power came up short but climbed to 68th in the FedEx Cup standings, securing his PGA Tour card for next year, which goes to players inside the top 100.
