A list circulating on social media claiming to identify the final 10 contenders for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or has raised questions after including Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Bayern Munich’s Luis Díaz, whose names do not match the remaining candidates in the published rankings.
The list names Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Ousmane Dembélé, Lionel Messi, Luis Díaz, Erling Haaland, Michael Olise and Fabián Ruiz as the final 10 players awaiting their positions at Monday’s ceremony in London. Blueprint reports
However, the list contains clear discrepancies with the official nominees and rankings published by the Ballon d’Or organisers.
Rodrygo was not among the original 30 nominees announced for the 2026 award, while Díaz has already been placed 24th in the ranking released during the ceremony.
The discrepancies mean the circulating list should not be treated as the official final 10.
What the published rankings show
The rankings released so far have placed Jude Bellingham 11th, Pau Cubarsí 12th, Achraf Hakimi 13th, Vitinha 14th and Declan Rice 15th.
Ferran Torres finished 16th, Vinícius Júnior 17th, Marc Cucurella 18th, João Neves 19th and Willian Pacho 20th.
The next positions included Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães in 21st, Lautaro Martínez in 22nd, Nuno Mendes in 23rd, Díaz in 24th and Marquinhos in 25th.
Dayot Upamecano was ranked 26th, Bruno Fernandes 27th and Julián Quiñones 28th, while Sadio Mané and William Saliba shared 29th place.
These published positions help establish which players remain in contention for the top 10.
Who are the remaining contenders?
Based on the original 30-man shortlist and the rankings already published, the 10 players yet to be assigned positions are:
Ousmane Dembélé
Erling Haaland
Harry Kane
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Lamine Yamal
Kylian Mbappé
Lionel Messi
Michael Olise
Rodri
Fabián Ruiz
The final order will determine which player wins the award and how the other nine finish.
The distinction is important because being among the final 10 is not the same as winning the Ballon d’Or. The winner is determined by the votes of an international jury of journalists.
Ballon d’Or ceremony in London
The 2026 ceremony is taking place at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, marking the first time the event has been hosted in the British capital.
The award, established by France Football in 1956, recognises individual performances, team achievements and fair play during the assessment period.
Mbappé, Kane and Yamal have attracted significant attention in the build-up to the announcement, while Dembélé, Haaland, Messi, Rodri and the other remaining contenders also feature in the final group.
The official rankings are being revealed in stages during the ceremony. Until the organisers publish the final positions, claims circulating online about the composition or order of the top 10 should be checked against the official list.
The eventual result will settle the debate over who succeeds Dembélé as the men’s Ballon d’Or winner.
