World leaders and representatives from African countries are arriving in Moscow for two major international meetings focused on energy co-operation and Russia-Africa relations.
The Eighth Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, bringing together leaders from some of the world’s major gas-producing nations.
The Third Russia-Africa Summit will follow on October 28 and 29, with heads of state, government officials and representatives of regional organisations and blocs expected to participate.
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said 48 of Africa’s 54 countries had confirmed their participation, with 22 expected to be represented at head-of-state level.
The Russia-Africa Summit is a major platform for Moscow’s engagement with African countries, providing an opportunity to discuss political, economic and diplomatic co-operation.
The GECF summit, meanwhile, is expected to focus on global gas markets, energy security and co-operation among gas-producing countries.
The meetings come amid growing international competition for energy partnerships and stronger economic ties with African nations.
