The Edmonton Oilers are on a torrid start in 2026-27. They have been running through teams in the NHL this year. A major reason for this is the impeccable play of captain Connor McDavid. Against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, McDavid showed once again why this run he’s on is unlike anything we’ve seen.
McDavid provided an assist on Vasily Podkolzin’s opening goal against the Red Wings. This assist gave him 34 points on the season already. It also broke an Oilers franchise record, as noted by Sportsnet Stats.

McDavid is by far the NHL’s points leader at this time. His current point pace puts him at 238 points across a full 84-game season. This would shatter the NHL’s single-season points record, currently held by Wayne Gretzky.
The Oilers and Red Wings are in the midst of a close game. Viktor Arvidsson answered Podkolzin’s goal in the second period to make it a 1-1 game. Isaac Howard scored his first of the season in the third period to re-establish Edmonton’s lead. However, the Red Wings answered back, as Emmitt Finnie scored to tie it again.
As mentioned, Edmonton is having quite the start to the season. New head coach Mike Babcock, who used to coach the Red Wings as well, has the Oilers running as a well-oiled machine, so to speak. They have won eight of their first 11 games this year.
The Oilers are looking to win the Stanley Cup this season. If McDavid can continue his historic run, they certainly have a shot at it. Before all of that, though, they need to take care of business against the Red Wings on Monday night.
