Assam: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Monday staged a protest in Assam’s Sribhumi district against the attack on a Bihu troupe, which was allegedly assaulted for performing Bihu songs, and demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.
The protest was organised in the district headquarters by the All Sribhumi District Students' Union, the All Cachar District Students' Union and the All Hailakandi District Students' Union, with support from the Barak Valley units of the Chutia students’ union and the larger community, according to a statement. It was led by AASU state executive member and Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar winner Srikrishna Mohan Singha.
Describing the attack as heinous and barbaric, the students' body said it would not take the matter lightly. It asserted that the insult to Bihu on Assam's soil would not be tolerated and that no one could escape after attacking artistes merely for performing Assamese songs. "Justice is needed, the guilty must be punished," the union said.
At the end of the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the Sribhumi district commissioner and the senior superintendent of police. It sought an impartial investigation and strict, exemplary punishment for every person involved in the incident.
