ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government has announced that it will give away 500,000 refurbished chromebooks to the highest scoring students in grade 9 across the country under the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebooks Scheme.
The scheme will be managed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Professional Training in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme. TT Care Foundation (Tokyo Technology Care Foundation) will provide the devices through a letter of understanding. Student eligibility A minimum score of 50 percent is required to be eligible for selection in the scheme, for students of their latest SSC-I (Grade 9) exams.
The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) will validate the results. Selection will be on the basis of pure merit within each region or province, the education board, and the academic stream. The applicants should be students in public sector schools, private schools supported by provincial governments and provincial educational foundations, and registered madaris. Quotas for each region or province have been set at Punjab 181,090, Sindh 85,925, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 51,170, and Balochistan 31,815. ICT 100,000, AJK 25,000, and GB 25,000. Schools will verify the markersheet results, current student registration, and current school affiliation prior to sending the Chromebooks through courier. The courier service has a tracking system and complaint committees will be set up for complaints regarding the selection process, verification, and non-fulfilment of the promise of delivery. The Prime Minister announced the scheme in Islamabad on 25 October 2026. Each student selected will also receive a backpack and MiFi internet device so they can access online learning material, e-libraries, and digital material at home. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the devices would be given strictly on merit and there would be no let up for talented students due to lack of means.
He recalled the distribution of 600,000 laptops by previous PML-N governments during the last 10 years, to restore the country’s digital economy while the current scheme is proposing to launch 500,000 chromebooks in the next two years which will also benefit 2.5 million persons through the internet connection.
“The real purpose of the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebooks Scheme is to bring the digitally unconnected students into the online economy,” said the prime minister.
