A family business can spend a century building trust and lose it in a single generation.
Leaders quite often confuse ownership with responsibility. The company carries their name, their history, and perhaps four generations of family sacrifice, so they begin to believe its future should follow their wishes.
Yet a business is a living institution, sustained by employees who give it their working lives, customers who trust its products, and suppliers who depend on its stability. Its owner may hold the shares, but the consequences of its decisions belong to a much wider community.
This is why succession deserves far more attention than it receives. Deloitte’s 2026 global family business research found that 40 percent of family businesses expect a CEO change within the next decade, while only 46 percent have broad, well-developed succession plans.
Those figures reveal a dangerous gap between knowing change is coming and preparing for it. Passing the business to a son, daughter, or another relative is a decision about ownership. Preparing someone to protect its people and future is a decision about leadership.
I lead a family-owned automotive chemicals company with four generations of my family behind it. I also have a newborn son, and I would love to give him the opportunity to choose whether he wants to be part of the business someday.
That choice matters to me because my responsibility is to leave him an opportunity, not an obligation. The company must be worth inheriting, whoever eventually leads it.
My understanding of leadership has also been shaped by people outside my family. I have learned from leaders whose experience, judgment, and ability to bring people together have challenged my own assumptions.
A surname cannot guarantee competence, just as a different surname cannot diminish it. The leader best equipped to take a company forward may be the person who has earned the trust of its people and understands its customers most deeply.
What Is at Stake!
What happens when a leader refuses to accept this? An unprepared successor can take control, experienced employees may leave, product standards slip, and customers will gradually take their loyalty elsewhere. The company may retain its name while losing the qualities that gave that name value.
A healthier future is possible when outgoing leaders prepare capable successors, invest in their workforce, and give the next generation room to make necessary changes.
One path leaves a company weakened by personal ambition; the other gives employees, customers, and communities a business they can continue to rely on.
What people may fail to see is that a failed succession can threaten livelihoods, disrupt supply chains, and remove trusted products from people’s lives.
A successful one, however, can preserve jobs, support local economies, and give future generations a place to build careers.
Every consumer who depends on a reliable product, every employee who needs a stable income, and every small supplier awaiting payment has a stake in how a business changes hands.
Selling to private equity can make financial sense for an owner who has spent decades building a valuable company. The offer may provide security for a family and a substantial return on years of work.
Yet the purchase price is only one measure of what is being transferred. What happens to the people who know the business inside out? Will product quality remain a priority? Will customer relationships receive the same care once financial targets begin to dominate decisions?
Identifying the Dangers
Private equity firms are not all alike, and a sale can provide capital and expertise for growth. The danger lies in treating the transaction as the end of the owner’s responsibility.
Before signing, I believe owners should examine the buyer’s plans for employees, manufacturing standards, customer service, and long-term investment. A lucrative deal can still carry a heavy human cost if the business is stripped of the capabilities that made it valuable.
Stewardship becomes most visible when circumstances turn difficult. Rising raw-material costs once forced us to pull back on marketing expenditure. Those decisions demanded discipline, but they also required us to understand which parts of the business deserved protection.
Reputation takes years to establish, and product quality gives customers a reason to return. Spending can be adjusted; trust is much harder to rebuild.
The same principle applies to employees. I have worked for people who now report to me, which gives me a personal understanding of the responsibility that comes with managing them. Each person has different motivations and circumstances.
Treating everyone as interchangeable may simplify a spreadsheet, but it weakens the relationships that allow a company to function.
Long-serving employees carry institutional knowledge that cannot be replaced overnight, and customers who remain loyal for decades provide a kind of validation no advertising campaign can manufacture.
Stewardship also requires change. The International Energy Agency reported that electric car sales exceeded 20 million worldwide in 2025, accounting for roughly one in four new cars sold.
Automotive businesses must respond to evolving vehicle technologies while continuing to serve millions of existing vehicles, and they must adapt to changing customer expectations. History gives them something worth protecting and a responsibility to stay relevant.
Planning Succession
I want our company to be here for the next century. Achieving that will require decisions that may carry my generation’s fingerprints less visibly than we might like. That is a worthwhile price to pay.
Family-business owners must begin preparing for succession before retirement or financial pressure forces their hand. They should identify capable successors, give them meaningful responsibility, and establish clear plans for transferring knowledge and authority. They should also scrutinize any prospective buyer’s intentions with the same care they apply to the purchase price.
I would ask every owner three questions: What am I responsible for protecting? Who am I preparing to carry it forward? What must change for this business to remain valuable?
The answers should determine the next chapter of the company, even if they challenge the owner’s pride. Leadership is a temporary privilege with lasting consequences. If we want family businesses to survive, their leaders must learn to let go while they still have the power to shape what comes next.
