By Zoila Palma: Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has disputed reports that human remains recovered in Haiti belong to four Salvadoran soldiers who went missing following a gang ambush on October 18.
Bukele said the remains handed over to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) at Toussaint Louverture International Airport did not match the missing personnel.
“They are not our men,” Bukele said in a post on X, explaining that the remains appeared to belong to a child, a man considerably taller than the missing aviation technicians, and a person wearing part of a military uniform that did not belong to El Salvador’s army.
The GSF confirmed on Sunday that it had received burned human remains suspected to be those of the missing soldiers, the Haitian Times report.
However, the force said their identities had not been officially confirmed, as doctors continued examining the remains. The GSF also clarified that a military identification card from Chad circulating on social media belonged to a Chadian soldier who lost it during the search and remains with his unit.
Bukele has said his priority is to bring the missing men home alive and unharmed, while the GSF continues security operations in areas where armed gangs operate.
