Example of how and where the iPhone Duo hinge is failing, breaking the screen
In a very brief statement, Apple says that a small number of iPhone Duo units have an issue impacting the inner display. It does not appear to be that many units impacted.
Over the weekend, there have been accounts on social media discussing iPhone Duo screen failures. They are all remarkably similar, and appear to be because of a hinge failure.
On Monday afternoon, Apple issued a brief statement about the matter.
"We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units," Apple said. "If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."
In follow-up remarks, posted by Mark Gurman on X, Apple says that most units will not the issue. Furthermore, the screen-break will happen very shortly after first opening the device.
It's not clear how many units are impacted. It's not a giant amount, though.
Since Saturday morning, we've been talking to US Apple Store Genius Bars that we've been working with for 15 years or more. While we first started with seven stores, and one infant failure as of Monday morning, this number in both regards have grown.
We have now spoken to staffers in 20 Genius Bars that we trust. That number has grown to four impacted iPhone Duo units, all with screen issues. This figure does not help you if yours is one, though.
Unfortunately, at this time, we have no visibility internationally, no data outside those 20 stores, and have no hooks inside Apple's online AppleCare apparatus.
And on Saturday we gave you the same advice, that Apple did today. If you've got an issue, you should, in fact, contact AppleCare.
So far, the four cases that we are aware of were fixed by giving the purchaser a replacement phone from service stock, which is separate from sale stock. None of the four have returned.
