Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s parliamentary email account was among the targets of a cyberattack on the IT systems of Italy’s lower house of parliament, according to a source in the assembly. The incident was reported on Tuesday (October 27, 2026), raising fresh concerns about cybersecurity risks facing government institutions across Europe.
The attack targeted the Chamber of Deputies' systems in recent days and also involved email accounts belonging to other lawmakers. However, officials said the situation was under control and that they had activated protective measures.
Meloni’s office clarified that the targeted email account was not the one she uses for official government communications. Authorities have not publicly established the incident's full scope or confirmed whether sensitive information was accessed.
Italian Parliament Activates Security Measures
A source in the Chamber of Deputies said the cyberattack affected multiple accounts and institutional IT systems. Officials stressed that there was no immediate security emergency and that they had put the necessary safeguards in place.
The response included cooperation with Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN). Officials said they followed established security procedures to protect the affected systems. These measures can include temporarily disabling certain IT functions when required to limit risks.
The authorities have not disclosed detailed technical information about the attack, including who may have been responsible or how the systems were targeted. The available information also does not establish whether the incident resulted in the theft of confidential data.
Meloni’s Government Email Not Involved
The distinction between Meloni’s parliamentary email and her government communications account is important. The targeted address was associated with her role as a member of parliament, rather than the account she uses for her work as prime minister.
Her office said she did not use the parliamentary email for government communications. This clarification helps define the scope of the reported incident, although it does not, by itself, answer questions about what information, if any, may have been exposed through the affected parliamentary systems.
Other lawmakers’ email accounts were also reportedly targeted, indicating that the incident extended beyond the prime minister’s parliamentary address.

Cyberattacks Raise Wider Security Concerns
The incident comes amid a broader pattern of cyberattacks targeting public institutions, infrastructure and businesses in Italy and other European countries. Such attacks can disrupt services, expose sensitive information and threaten government operations.
For now, officials have emphasized that protective measures are in place and that the situation does not constitute an emergency. The attackers' identity, possible motives, and the incident's full impact remain unclear.
The episode highlights the importance of strong cybersecurity systems and coordinated responses as public institutions face increasingly persistent digital threats. Further technical findings will be needed to determine the attack’s precise scope and consequences.
